Hijab Ban: 6 students in Yadgir return without writing Class 12 exams

Yadgir, Apr 25 (IANS): Refusing to take off their hijab, six students in Karnataka's Yadgir district returned home without writing their Class 12 exams on Monday.

The incident took place at the Government Pre-University College in Yadgir.

The girl students, who had come to write their economics exam, insisted with the authorities to let them write the paper wearing hijab. After their request was turned down, the students walked out from the examination centre, refusing to take off their hijab.

The crucial Class 12 exams are being conducted peacefully across the state. The students, especially the Muslim girls, are following the uniform rules and writing their papers without wearing hijab.

As many as 68,84,255 students have enrolled for the board exams, which began on April 22 amid tight security in the backdrop of the hijab row.

The special bench of the Karnataka High Court had earlier dismissed the petitions seeking to allow students to attend classes wearing hijab. It also mentioned that wearing hijab is not an essential part of Islam.

Following the court order, the Karnataka government banned hijab in classrooms and announced that hijab-clad students and teachers will not be allowed inside the examination centres.

Aliya Assadi, one of the petitioners, took to Twitter to slam the decision to ban entry of hijab-clad students.

"Again and again we face disappointment! BJP MLA Raghupathy Bhat had threatened us with criminal cases against us if we go to attend exams tomorrow. What is the crime here? Where is our country headed to," she had questioned.

On April 22, Assadi and Resham Farooq tried to enter the examination centre in Udupi clad in hijab. BJP MLA Raghupathy Bhat had lashed out at them for 'disturbing' other students, saying they were just trying to create a scene before the media.

Bhat had also warned that if the students repeat their act, they should be charged with a criminal case for contempt of court.

I feel too much media publicity is being given to these non events... There are better things to shed light on... There are many children really deprived of education due to helplessness... This voluntary submission has to be left to the conscience of the individuals...

Dear students please do not sacrifice education due to religious practices. If a photograph can be given to passport authorities without any problem, then the exam can be written without hijab. Education is for our benefit incase we need to work and earn.

Appreciate the courage of this innocent little girls. Govt should be ashamed of fighting with little girls on silly little issues. Modi is maintaining silent mode like a guilt free saint from a distance after hatching his behind the scene plans.

Is banning beef govt rule but the same govt exporting beef is another govt rule?. Is socializing with person of choice and marrying person of choice is govt rule?. Is right to choice to religion govt rule? Is doing business with person of choice is govt rule?. Is wearing decent clothes of choice govt rule?. Is Dalits and menstruating women going to temples govt rule?. Are all these rules are enshrined in the constitution?. If not why PM is not talking about taking action against whoever is imposing these rules?. So what is legal and illegal as per the constitution after 2014?.

are these girls "little", "innocent"? Were you called a "little innocent boy" at 27 and 18? Did you marry an innocent little girl of 27 or 18? You and your think-alike fellow=mate have different definitions of what is little and innocent. Crazy people think alike

Those innocent little ones only approached court, they only said they will follow court decision (and not Govt). Now the Court delivered the judgement. So, all over now unless there is a hidden conspiracy in the name of this subject.
