Reduce fuel tax 'in spirit of cooperative federalism', PM Modi to states

New Delhi, Apr 27 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged the states to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel "in the spirit of cooperative federalism".

During a virtual meeting with chief ministers, Prime Minister Modi stressed how the country fought a long battle against Covid with the spirit of cooperative federalism.

"The same should be done for economic issues, given the impact of global issues like the ongoing war-like situation in the world," he added.

"Let me give you a small example. The Centre reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel last November to reduce the burden on the citizens. We also requested the states to reduce their taxes and transfer the benefit to the people. Some reduced taxes but some states did not give any benefit from this to the people", he said.

"Due to this, the prices of petrol and diesel in these states continue to remain high. In a way, this is not only an injustice to the people of these states but it also has an impact on neighbouring states," he added.

While listing out the states that did not reduce VAT on fuel during the steep hikes, Prime Minister Modi said, "I am not criticising anyone, just discussing".

The Prime Minister said it's natural that the states that reduced their taxes will suffer losses in revenue but several states took that "positive step" anyway.

22 lakh crores collected as per parliament statements ... This is only in Last 5 years by ruling dispensation.. Only fuel taxes .. extra burden ... For long oil was @ usd 50 per barrel average .. Gone down at one time to usd 30 / less .. All after 2014 .. meaning for bjp India’s was born or started after 2014 ... Further now in gst regime for states ...only major revenue is on fuel taxes and liquor .. GST COMPENSATION NOT PAID BY CENTRE .. rightful share .. Always going with begging bowl .. to get gst dues ...centre does not follow what it preaches ... FURTHER CLEVERLY CESS AND FEW OTHER TAXES ADDED WHICH CENTRE DOES NOT HAVE TO SHARE WITH STATES .. So all in all chicanery ...

Fuel and liquor are the only two highest consumption commodities and the highest revenue earners for the government, but are still on the old VAT taxation system. Why are these two commodities not on GST taxation system should be asked to the PM. When they come under GST the Center and the petroleum Companies cannot play around to their whims and fancy and the central Govt. not controlling these artificial. Inflation even when a barrel of crude Was selling as low as $65!

There are few states which which don't contribute anything in terms collection of taxes but are fed by the tax share of other states contributed the highest. Let the centre work on the poor states in terms of development and generate better state GDP instead of wasting time on religious issues.

The request is honest. But let us ask this question now that BJP is at helm of affair in Bangalore viz., if Bommai gives up on the tax on fuel, how will he shore up for the lost revenue to run the show? He can only spend money that he can generate by selling, fuel (petrol, diesel and bottled alcohol), land registration and road tax. What other sources of revenue generation does he have? Honest way out is this problem is to tell it out loud that if international crude oil prices rise, you pay through your nose in the petrol station - eventually that is a fact. This is true around the world, including KSA. Those that you want encourage find ways to give them credit/subsidy to encourage the biz that will eventually generate revenue for the state/center.

In spirit of cooperative federalism and best interest of common man, if you had not wanted aircrafts costing 4600 crore, 23000 crores on central vista, statue of unity worth 2300 crores and many more statues, avoided the 92 trips to 55 countries costing 2021 crores, if you had not done the blunder of 'demonetization' which cost India 1 to 2% of the GDP and hasty brainless implementation of GST?
