Udupi, Jun 26: In a unique and exemplary act, a judge walked out of the court and approached an elderly woman, sitting in an auto rickshaw as she could not climb the stairs to reach the court, listened to her plea. This rarest of rare incident occurred in the city on Saturday June 25 during Mega Lok Adalat.
Rashtriya Lok Adalat was held at various courts of Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur on June 25 as per the directive of Karnataka state legal services authority.
In order to take part in the original plea dating back to 2011, Devaki Shedthi (81) came to the court campus in an auto rickshaw. She had given GPA to her daughter Jayanti. As Devaki could not climb the stairs of the court, she sat in the auto rickshaw itself. When informed about the situation, civil judge of fourth additional court Justice Jeetu R S, member secretary of district legal services authority Sharmila S, compromisers lawyer Mitesh Shetty and lawyers of both parties walked to the autorickshaw and investigated the matter with elderly woman Devaki and resolved the issue through video conferencing with four other parties living in Mumbai.
The specialty of the case is that mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and others participated in the discussion and got their issue resolved.
In total 30,773 cases were resolved in one day itself through compromise and a whopping Rs 20,50,13,358 was declared as compensation. For couples who were living apart since three years due to some differences got united during the Lok Adalat in the presence of the chief justice.
In Karkala, in a pre-litigation in which two plaintiffs and 98 defendants were involved, the matter was resolved through compromise. A pre-litigation case between brother and sister that was registered in 2014 also got resolved in the chief senior civil judge court. In addition, a pre-litigation case pertaining back to 2004 was also decided through compromise.
In Kundapur, a case pertaining to 2008 of enmity between two parties was resolved through compromise with the intervention of compromisers, judges and lawyers.
