Udupi, Jul 14: A youth who promised a girl of getting married and sexually harassed her was sentenced to 20 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by the POCSO fast track court of the district additional and session court.
The sentence was pronounced by justice Srinivasa Suvarna.
Kiran (28), a resident of Kodavoor is the accused who is convicted in the case. The victim is a 16-year-old girl. Kiran sexually harassed her making her believe that he is going to marry her. He also video recorded the act and threatened the girl and harassed her sexually umpteen number of times.
Kiran's sister had also spoken to the victim girl and assured her of marriage with her brother. The neighbours who saw the movements of Kiran and the victim girl brought the same to the notice of the girl's parents. The girl confided everything in her parents when they questioned her. Parents of the victim girl registered a case in Udupi women police station.
Kiran and his sister were arrested by the police and later released on bail. A chargesheet was filed by the then inspector of woman police station Kalavati. Supporting evidence proved Kiran guilty. His sister was acquitted as the charges could not be proved.
Kiran was sentenced to 20 years RI and slapped a fine Rs 10,000 for sexual harassment, 10 years imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine under POCSO case, and one year jail sentence for threat.
The court also ordered him to pay Rs 4 lac to the victim girl as compensation. Special public prosecutor Y T Raghavendra argued for the prosecution.
