Retainer wall collapse scare: Mangaluru-Madikeri NH 275 closed for traffic

Daijiworld Media Network – Madikeri (MS)

Mangaluru/Madikeri, Jul 17: The National Highway 275 that connects Madikeri to Mangaluru is closed for traffic from the night of July 16 due to the possibility of a retainer wall collapse near the DC's office.

The police have installed barricades near the Madikeri toll gate. Traffic is diverted through Mekeri Road. But this road is too narrow and the traffic is congested for the same reason.

The retainer wall was built just a year ago at a cost of Rs 7 crore near DC's office. However, due to incessant rains the slabs of the retainer walls tilted. On Saturday officials tried to fix the bolts by drilling the wall in order to hold it. However, after the drilling the possibility of wall collapse increased.

Senior police and NHAI officers are at the spot where the road is blocked to ensure strict adherence to the order.

Feel like crying when one sees the walls erected and now supported. For this you dont need a Engineer or expert. How sad tax payers money is being wasted. They are not even fixed or in the right position.Important is noone has checked I feel when the work was completed. Now to remove them and fix new need another crores and road will be closed I find best is start from beginning but a efficient Engineer who is from foreign.Atleast work might go in the right direction.

Resembles more of " Cow Dung cakes", but here square shaped. Retaining wall peals out like dried cow dung cakes from a compond wall (60's way of uses for cooking or warming water for bathing purpose) Tiles or thin interlocking slabs are used instead of reinforced iron bars and concrete wall !🙈😩r with 7 crores . Make the contractors rebuild the retaing wall free of cost or sue them legally.

The function of a retaining wall is to form a nearly vertical face through confinement and/or strengthening of a mass of earth or other bulk material. Likewise, the function of a reinforced slope is to strengthen the mass of earth or other bulk material such that a steep (up to 1H:2V) slope can be formed. In both cases, the purpose of constructing such structures is to make maximum use of the limited right of way. The difference between the two is that a wall uses a structural facing, whereas a steep reinforced slope does not require a structural facing. Reinforced slopes typically use a permanent erosion control matting with low vegetation as a slope cover to prevent erosion. To layout and design a retaining wall or reinforced slope, consider the following items: • Functional classification • Highway geometry • Design Clear Zone requirements (see Chapter 1600) • Amount of excavation required • Traffic characteristics • Constructability • Impact to adjacent environmentally sensitive areas • Impact to adjacent structures • Potential added lanes • Length and height of the wall • Material to be retained • Foundation support and potential for differential settlement • Groundwater • Earthquake loads • Right of way costs • Need for construction easements • Risk • Overall cost • Visual appearance If the wall or toe of a reinforced slope is to be located adjacent to the right of way line, consider the space needed in front of the wall/slope to construct it. No 40% please.

Nothing less than buffoons have designed this wall for a hillock adjacent to the NH. If the concerned authorities/dept/engineers had done their studies well they would have built a step patterned wall .

wall was built just a year ago..cost 7 crores!!! 40 percent commission means the PWD minister must have made 2.8 crores....so naturally the contractor will do a sub standard job..good..keep going

If all the NH work was given to Chinese companies, they would've done a wonderful long-lasting job with their expertise and dedication at a lower cost??

Jab se BJP started the country is passing through a series of man made or natural calamities through out the country. Things have gone bad to worse or remained stagnant since 2014. Simple example. why fuel prices are not controlled ? Why both Central excise and State Sales tax is applied (GST I have no idea) Why Beef is still exported while domestically cattle butchering is banned. So many rules and acts on a certain community. 1 Dollar fetches Rs. 80/- and why Nalin the Aracanut Economist is so quiet now ? Against KD Rs.. 270 /- ! (Good for me )

It is a wrong idea to adopt RE wall to that site. {Reinforced earth wall (RE wall) is used for sustaining soil laterally so that it can be retained at different levels on both sides of the "carriageway".} Gravity or cantilever type of concrete retaining wall with necessary weep holes should have been provided.
