New Delhi, Jul 17 (IANS): Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Margaret Alva was on Sunday announced as the opposition's Vice Presidential candidate.
The name of Alva, who has also been Governor of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, and hails from Karnataka, was decided after opposition parties met at NCP supremo's Sharad Pawar residence.
The NDA has fielded West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar for the post.
BJP chief J P Nadda announced the name of Dhankhar after the Parliamentary Board meeting at party headquarters on Saturday evening.
Margaret Alva was born in Mangaluru. She completed her BA graduation from Mount Carmel College in Bengaluru.
Later, she obtained a law degree from the Government Law College. As an advocate, she was also involved in politics.
The 80-year-old Margaret Alva was elected as a Lok Sabha member from the Uttara Kannada district.
She is a veteran Congress leader who has served as the governor of Goa, Gujarath, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand till her completion of tenure in 2014.
She has a profound experience in politics and administration as Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha member and union minister.
