Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (HB/EP)
Udupi, August 24: Chetan Shetty of Daijiworld TV had an interview with former MP and president of Karnataka backward class commission K Jayaprakash Hegde to celebrate India’s 75th Independence Day and 25th silver jubilee of Udupi district. Following are the excerpts:
Q: Has your dream that Udupi district should be in a particular way become a reality?
A: The district that progressed in stages has given me satisfaction. Some of the things have remained. The number of staff in the department of forests and sub-divisional offices should be increased.
Q: Were there opposition when the twin districts were split?
A: There was nothing like that. Though Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts were split for administration they have remained together on sentiments.
Q: It is challenging to take the district towards progress rather than creating it. How did you face them?
A: Officials were appointed to the offices of deputy commissioner and district panchayat in stages. Therefore, all the offices are available in Udupi. None of them has remained behind.
Q: How were the basic facilities in Udupi 25 years ago?
A: Several educational institutes were present as Udupi is a taluk centre. Many other institutes opened later. Investments also came in. I desire that investments and jobs increase in the future.
Q: How was Manipal 25 years ago?
A: Though the name of Manipal was there, it had not grown this far. Later as the office of deputy commissioner was shifted there, it gained importance. It is convenient as all the departments are found systematically in the same office.
Q: What are the development works during the last 25 years?
A: There are village roads, bridges and dams that are developed. They have helped the farmers. It was possible for fishermen to indulge in their trade. Therefore, there is a difference between Udupi of the past and the present.
Q: How are the celebrations of silver jubilee in Udupi?
A: Several programmes are planned for the silver jubilee. A list of changes and developments during the last 25 years is being prepared. People should know history. There will be a display of short films. The celebrations will continue till January 25.
Q: Do you regret that a medical college has not been opened in the district?
A: Yes. The current medical system is challenging. Ordinary people in the district should be able to obtain medical assistance during emergency situations.
Q: Has the tourism sector been successful on expected lines?
A: Tourism should grow further in the coastal region. I have regrets about it.
Q: Is it possible to set aside our culture to develop tourism?
A: It is not possible to give up our culture for progress. Tourism has continued even though there are temples at Gokarna. There should be progress with awareness in our part of the region.
Q: How should Udupi be according to you after 50 years?
A: Environmentally friendly industries should increase. Children should be able to find jobs here. People in the coastal district should compete more in banking and police department examinations.
Q: What are the projects during your term as president of the backward class commission?
A: 17 reports have been prepared during the period and submitted to the government. The reservations for a few groups are extended. Discussions over reservations for orphaned children are in progress.
Q: Do you expect to be the MP of Udupi – Chikkamagaluru constituency in the future?
A: I am satisfied with the work done so far. I have not thought about it for now.
Q: What is your message or request to the people finally?
A: The officials and offices in the district should work effectively. Politicians should hold progress review meetings without fail so that the aim of our new district will be realised.
