Udupi, Jun 21: An advanced new generation 128-slice Philips incisive CT machine installed in department of Radio-diagnosis, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal was inaugurated by Dr Sudarshan Ballal, chairman Manipal Health Enterprises here at the hospital campus on Wednesday, June 21. Dr H S Ballal pro chancellor MAHE presided over the function and Dilip Jose CEO & MD Manipal Health Enterprises and Dr H Vinod Bhat vice-chancellor MAHE were the guests of honour.

Dr Sudarshan Ballal Chairman MHEPL said, “Developments in radio diagnosis and imaging has provided considerable relief to patients to compared to olden days when diagnostic tests used to be barbaric. The doctors are able to diagnose the diseases better and it gives better and appropriate treatment to patients.” Dr Ballal added that he considers advancement in Radio diagnosis as one of the most helpful mankind has achieved so far.



“MAHE and Kasturba Hospital is committed to providing world class care to patients including economically challenged. This machine is the display of the commitment to the society. This model of the CT machine is the first of its kind to be installed not only in India but in the world. With its installation, diagnostic imaging will become far better with increased efficiency, diagnostic confidence and improved workflow,” said Dr Ballal.

High quality images will be obtained at a faster rate striking a balance between high performance and workflow efficiency. The machine will be open for public in a few days after the completion of licensing formalities.

The routine imaging of head, neck, abdomen and pelvis can be performed as in other machines. In addition, it is adept at performing CT angiography of any part of body as well as 3D volume rendered images which are extremely useful in cases of trauma patients where rapid imaging and diagnosis is crucial.

The comprehensive cardiac software in this high speed scanner is excellent in assessing coronary artery stenosis even with high heart rate and breathing difficulty. Blood flow quantification to heart muscle is possible with non-invasive myocardial perfusion imaging.

Assessment of degree of osteoporosis in patients, sharp Paediatric imaging, and ability to detect renal stones with very low patient radiation dose are few of other advanced applications. The newly upgraded CT scan room is specially designed to maintain a calm ambience and is another addition to the quest to provide accurate and good quality imaging to patients.
