Mangaluru: Inebriated retired SP drives car on wrong side, hits five vehicles

Mangaluru, Jan 27: In a bizarre incident that occurred on the midnight of Saturday, January 26, a retired superintendent of police (SP) drove his car on the wrong side of the road in an inebriated state and collided against five vehicles.

Mitra Heraje, retired SP, is the person who caused havoc due to his drunken stupor.

This incident took place when the said retired police officer was driving his car from Circuit House to Bejai. As he was driving on the wrong side, in spite of the divider, his car hit with five oncoming vehicles and damaged them. Two guys who were travelling in a scooter got injured and are admitted into a private hospital in the city.

When people gathered on the spot and expressed their rage, Mitra Heraje did not get down from the car and told the public that he is a retired senior police officer. Public got infuriated when they heard that a retired SP, who has to follow rules and discipline is on the wrong side of the law and started to abuse him.

Police presonnel of Kadri and Urwa police station arrived at the spot and resorted to mild caning to disperse the agitated public. 

According to police sources, a case at Traffic East police station has been registered against Mitra Heraje and he is under investigation. Even the vehicle has been detained.

    Most of the traffic offences in Mangalore iare due to traffic police apathy as they don't enforce law. Wrong side driving/riding,helmetless riding by youngsters with out license, excessive high decibel honking, picking up passengers in the middle of road by reckless, arrogant bus drivers happens right under their nose. But they are oblivious and busy with phones. Nothing happens in this case too as he is retired police officer and influencial.

    he was also drunk ..as per rules cops should check his drunk test but they dint... the retired SP was drunk as hell
    law is equal to all and cops have no right to hit a civilians so badly ..everybody has a right to question

    It was utter disgraceful that a law enforcing police department, retired high ranking officer driving in a Inebriated state of mind; that too on the wrong side of the road.
    Appreciate the locals who have agitated against this SP's accident, who was driving wrong side of the road. I do not understand why the police has to used the mild lathi charge to the public who have agitated.;rather immediately arrest the wrong doer, guilty. Request the police personnel to apolozise the public, to whom they have lathi charged.

    I personally know lots of youngsters much below the legal age of 18 driving both two and four wheelers in Mangalore, of course without a driving licence. They are putting their own lives at risk as well as those of other innocent, law abiding road users. Triple riding on two wheelers, that too without any helmets is a common sight on our city roads as no one cares for rules or the police. I am surprised why no one is bothered and police are just ignoring this. Is it because of "chaltha hai" attitude or a serious shortage of traffic police?

You will watch always people throng much near gadang and bars.     May be this retired SP thinking the road is his father's property and being a retired police office he can do any thing he wish. Police should arrest him immediately and make him pay all the damages done to the cars and compensate the car drivers who got injured by reckless driving of this educated but illogic person. I am sure that he was in a drunken condition. He should be kept in jail for few months.
