Mangaluru, Jan 17: Asian Gold medalist in Kabaddi, Jagadeesh Kumble on Friday January 17 inaugurated the All India Inter NIT sports meet 2019-20 here, at NITK ground.
Addressing the gathering, Jagadeesh Kumble said, "Sports brings new energy in the hearts and minds of the students. It is a day to discover the inner talent in the field of sports. Sports and games help in large muscle co-ordination resulting in physical fitness apart from inculcating sportsmanship, leadership, unity, competitive spirit among the students."
Dean Student Welfare Prof Jagannatha Nayak said, "There is nothing other than sports which has multi-facilitated benefits for a human being. Sports gives physical fitness as well as mental fitness. Victory and loss are part of the game, which allows one to accept defeat and makes the person strong.”
In his presidential address, deputy director NITK, Prof Ananthanarayana V S said, "This Inter NIT Sports meet is very special to NITK Surathkal as we celebrate the diamond jubilee year. Since many NITs are sharing the event, It is a golden opportunity for all the NIT students, to visit various NITs on different occasions which will help them understand and appreciate the diversity in culture.”
Academics and sports are two faces of a coin and both are very important to shape professional life. Sports is not just an extracurricular activity, but plays an important role in what we do. There are two important things that we can learn from sports namely, it helps one to understand and overcome failures, and second is participating in sports is not just for gym, but it helps to keep ourselves fit as well as healthy.
As many as 890 participants from 23 different NITs namely NIT Agarthala, Bhopal, Srinagar, Delhi, Calicut, Jaipur, Allahabad, Goa, Uttarkhand, Patna, etc are taking part in this event.
