Kochi: Sabarimala 'Celestial Light' Man-made, Admit Authorities

Kochi, April 25 (IANS) The 'celestial light' at the Sabarimala temple on Makara Sankranthi day is actually man-made, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) told the Kerala High Court Monday, three months after a stampede killed 102 pilgrims there.

The board, which oversees the functioning of all temples in Kerala's southern districts, said this in an affidavit to the court, putting an end to speculation on the so-called celestial light.

TDB said it had never called the phenomenon a divine light and for long the fire had been lit by tribals living on the hillock.

TDB's affidavit was filed in response to the demand made by the court that is currently looking into a series of petitions filed soon after the stampede at Sabarimala Jan 14 when the "celestial light" had appeared three times.

Kerala Yukthivadi Sangham (KYS), a rationalist organisation, has been at the forefront of a campaign against what it calls cheating by the state government and the TDB.

Sanal Edamarukku, an office bearer of the KYS who has been fighting the practice of making an artificial light appear on the horizon and letting it pass as celestial, said finally their stand had been vindicated.

"This affidavit by the TDB has finally come and we are really happy that they spoke the truth," said Edamarukku.

The Jan 14 stampede occurred when the pilgrims were returning after watching the "celestial Makara Jyothi light", the most important event of a two-month pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district.

According to believers, the sighting of the celestial light is auspicious and, over the last few years, there has been a huge influx of pilgrims from the three southern states to witness it.

The number of pilgrims visiting the shrine has been going up every year.

I remember famous quote of Abraham Lincoln you can fool some people all the time and all people some time but you can not fool all at all time.
What a mess, people blindly following to watch makara vilakku, which was not natural.
Unless and until we do not understand the difference between Creator and creatures and start accepting creatures as God and fear and worship them such phenomenon bound to happen.
Darga's saints sufi's are good example among Muslims and we get cheated very easily.

In India many people believe thousands of blind believes and practicing in all ways. These are practiced in faith, treating patients, to start the work, for celebrations, buying new things, and for even time to go out. These are NOT at all proven by science or there is no evidence that these types of believes will affect the life or things. Religion and faith which made many people very rich in India and we can see these things. Political parties are not far behind to do so and it is rooted in every once mind so deep, it may not able to remove it. Every one must understand the reality of each practice and they must look for any sense is there in practicing or believing in it.

In this Kaliyuga, people will do anything to attract people to the respective shrines. Motive behind all these miracles are nothing but making money. I think God is repenting on his creation now, because he created human beings by thinking they will do something good, however people have taken it for granted.

It all about “belief”, other than that there is nothing, we, people are living in this century/era known ALL about life, from birth till death, God is invisible.
In all the religions (For ex Muslims are going to so many Darga’s making and asking prayers to reach their goals. Hindus are doing the same in vise versa, Christians are asking with their lord Christ) peoples are performing prayers but originally there will be no results, but peoples are believing whatever happens bcz of their visit to particular gods.
Only we have to lead our life with performing good habits such as helping the people each other, don’t cheat people, etc. In doing such good things you will live long and you will reach heaven.

Guys worship God and not the light. Lights are not more important than Ayappa Swami himself. Rama Sene must call for a bandh in Karnataka, this is a good excuse to disturb peace in the state. Public will get a holiday to watch IPL matches.
