Dr Shantharam Baliga Nominated Member of Technical Resource Group, ICDS, New Delhi

Mangalore, Apr 27: Dr B Shantharam Baliga, eminent paediatrician and professor and head of the department of pediatrics, Kasturba Medical College here, has been nominated as a member of the Technical Resource Group (TRG) on women, children and ICDS by National Institute of Public Co-operation and Child Development, New Delhi.
Dr Baliga is among seven persons from outside New Delhi and the only one from Karnataka to join the elite 26-member think tank headed by Dr Shreeranjan, joint secretary, ministry of women and child development.
The group comprises of paediatricians, community medicine specialists, women and child development experts, nutrition experts, senior executives of voluntary agencies and high ranking government officers. It has been formed to deliberate on issues relating to strengthening nutrition and health-related services under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme and facilitate in operationalising the core interventions identified in the Eleventh Plan for addressing India’s nutrition challenges.
Over the past two decades, Dr Baliga has been providing voluntary medical services in public hospitals through Mangalore Medical Relief Society. He has been instrumental in facilitating development of advanced tertiary care facilities in government hospitals. Today, more than 2,000 children belonging to poor families receive free care from these facilities and this is expected to expand over the next few years.
