Headmaster, who held essay competition on the Prophet, suspended

Gadag, Sep 29 (IANS): Karnataka Education Department on Thursday suspended a school headmaster in Gadag district for allegedly holding an essay writing competition on Prophet Mohammad for school students.

The suspended head master is identified as Abdul Munaaf Bijapur, of to Naagavi village Government Secondary School in Gadag taluk.

Additional Commissioner, Department of Public Instruction Sidramappa S. Biradara has issued the suspension order for the headmaster for holding the essay competition without any direction from the department or any government agency.

According to Education Department sources, the head master conducted the competition to 43 students of the school, and assured them of rewards. He had also distributed books titled "Mohammad for all" and "Only one Prophet" to the students.

The department had stated that suspension order had been issued as the headmaster had committed a mistake being in a position of responsibility and the allegations on him are proved prima facie in the inquiry.

Workers of Sri Rama Sene had protested in front of the school and questioned the headmaster for holding an essay competition on the Prophet. They had also alleged that religious fundamentalism is being forced upon school children and demanded the headmaster's suspension.

    I am of the opinion that children should not be taught any of religious books at school. Religious books are of those type where believers believe that everything written in the book is right and believers of other religion will find faults in the books of other religions. As long as you are believer, you are bound not to accept any wrong writings as wrong.

    Shanker Mangalore, it was one sided .centralising his own religion .Essays can be done in school on geographic or other subjects.Religion is one sided.A headmaster should be for whole school and lead his teachers on better teaching ways or give importance to subjects like languages ,or geographic ,etc.But not on spreading religion .He souldnt have given books on his religion .

    It should be first ascertained - whether the participation call to students was mandatory or optional ..?????? What is the need for publicity.., the HM should have been reprimanded... now this will cause some kind of hatred & intolerant atmosphere across the state & region..,

    I think nothing wrong the principal did.But the fanatics if islam never tolerate this. Some essays by the students would have been taken upto Nupur case. They never ever want to debate on The great prophet who preached peace all along the holy book.

    But to implement Bhagavad Gita in schools govt does it without the nod from parliament, state assembly, expert committee, stake holders, religious leaders etc etc bulldozing the law over night, unanimously in a unconstitutional way.

    Yes, we in India associate religion for our identity and have vested interests in pushing our agenda associated with our religious affiliation - read conversion. I hope one day all teachers really be like teachers and will not be suspected of the assignments they give to students due to their name. Clearly the headmaster chose the wrong time for this assignment. I wish there were some parables that are included in Indian curriculum that which has universal acceptance. I did not hear of one unfortunately of this religious affiliation that which was non-controversial.
