Mangalore: Electronic Eyes to Keep Watch on City Activities

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 29: The city, which had often witnessed communal flare ups and notorious activities in the past, will henceforth have another gadget in place to enable the policemen to keep watch over anti-social activities and take remedial measures without loss of precious time. The police department has decided to install cameras at strategic places in the city for the purpose.

The task of fixing over 30 closed circuit cameras in spots chosen by the police department is now in progress. Godrej Company has bagged this tender. These cameras will work without break, and can operate all the 360 degrees. The task is expected to be completed by mid-May. In all likelihood, these cameras will be functional before June 1.

City commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, has revealed that places like Hampankatta, PVS Circle, Jyoti, Mahavir Circle, Lalbagh, Lady Hill, State Bank, KSRTC bus stand, railway station, Kottara Chowki, Bunder among others, have been chosen for keeping round-the clock watch. In addition, cameras will also be focussed on other important roads in the city, and three national highways which connect the roads leading into the city.

Facilities to view the movements through these cameras have been set up at the police control room. The policemen will be able to keep tab over movements at all the places at once. The department hopes that these cameras will help the policemen to identify culprits involved with unsavoury activities and indict them without loss of time. The city, after Bangalore, will be the second city in the state to get this facility, and the police personnel believe that these cameras will improve their efficiency.

We have to see for how many days those cameras will work. I think it will work for few days then it will like traffic signal lights which is installed in places like bejai, bunts hostel, kankanady etc. Those signal lights are filled with rust and dust now and some of the vehicles are just hitting and going those traffic signal lights.

The government must first upgrade its legal system. Criminal cases get hoarded up for years by which time the accused is out on bail to commit more crimes. The victims continue to live with fear of being victimized again. Rape victims going on with life with no hopes and as in cases like Aruna Shanubhag the rapist out after serving sentence to live normal life but he victim's suffering has not end.

What will the police do with the camera recordings ? Are the recordings suffice as witness to crime ? Our law wants proof in person - not image ! If at all they detect anti-social movements through monitoring, the groups will instead be prompted than arrested. We have undergone this atrocity before - we don't need further convincing.

Installing 30 CCTV cameras is good but what is the scope?
Are they going to be used to record crime or to prevent the incidence of crime?
90% of CCTV in India is used to deter / record crime but if Mangalore Police is planning to use it for the latter it would be the first in the country to do so.
Currently Indian police is using CCTV only to monitor road traffic.
CCTV backend operations require special skills / training and cannot be carried out by ordinary policeman.
30 cameras will have 30 screens and 1 operator cannot handle efficiently more than 6 screens.
1 camera will have to be located inside the control room so that the system is transparent.
Police will also need additional interceptor vehicles and foot police patrol at stipulated locations.
This is going to be a Herculean task and police will need external assistance for effective operations.
I suggest every CCTV camera should have an option of remotely viewing from a PC with internet connection or PDA / Windows Mobile phones. All police officers should have access to these cameras.
It would be nice if prominent citizens volunteer their services to remotely access / monitor such cameras.
Welcome move for Mangaloreans. Big brother is watching.

MANGALORE SHOULD BE MADE LIKE DUBAI OR LONDON WITH CAMERAS EVERYWHERE. ONLY THEN, WILL THE SPATE OF CRIMES DECREASE. IN DUBAI, EVERYONE IS MONITORED WHETHER THEY REALIZE IT OR NOT. ONE SIMPLY CANNOT BEAT THE SYSTEM, BE IT, - RUNNING A RED LIGHT SIGNAL, OR A LADY EXERCISING OR WALKING ALONE IN THE PARK LATE AT NIGHT, OR SHOPLIFTING AT THE MALL. EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IS RECORDED.

I THINK THIS KIND OF SYSTEM SHOULD COME TO MANGALORE. ALL THE MANGALOREAN PEOPLE HOARDING THEIR BLACK MONEY SHOULD POOL IN THEIR RESOURCES TO COLLECTIVELY MAKE MANGALORE A SAFER PLACE FOR EVERYONE - MAN, WOMAN OR CHILD.

THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT CANNOT DO MUCH, AS THEY ARE FINANCIALLY AND MORALLY BANKRUPT. INSTEAD, ALL THE HIGH NET WORTH INDIVIDUALS SHOULD POOL IN THEIR RESOURCES TO THINK OF SOMETHING INNOVATIVE LIKE INSTALLING CAMERAS EVERYWHERE TO MAKE THE CITY A BETTER AND SAFER PLACE FOR THIER KIDS.

Great idea...! Every corner with a camera that catches people talking on their mobile while driving. If the city was serious about safety at there high risk. If people believe it is monitored which leagally means some one watches it 24X7 and incident happens and the victim finds out it is only recorded. I wish there were Red light camera's at every signal. Red light runners kill people.

These Camara's will automatically go off if BJP supported elements such as Bajarang Dal wants to create any trouble !

I do not understand why Camaras are required, our police very well know the trouble makers but their hands are tied by communal politicians !.

Excellent thinking by the people who took interest in implementing these cameras. Hope they have dedicated power supply or battery backup .. Else only 5-6 hours would be captured and recorded due to load shedding )
Looking at the big picture , I would like to congratulate the people who were mentors in implementing this system !!! "Thank you Sir" Atleast the crime would decrease by this fear !! Jai Hind !!

One more feather to the crown of Mangalore city. Congratulation!
I appeal our City commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh to request the corporate houses to donate another 30-50 closed circuit cameras so that all the nook and corner of Mangalore as well as all the entry points are covered by the electronic eyes.
Our MCC should make the future builders to compulsorily install at least on close circuit camera at the bldg entrance facing the gate and in a more luxury buildings, in all floors facing the lift/staircase. It will solve so many small time as well as major crimes within the city. Jai Kudla!

These camaras will used only against people they want to BJP/Bagrang dall exempted. They should track brahmins selling their cows to butchers then saying they were robed. One brahmin nearby sells his old cows to Dodi indirectly means butcher.Yet these worship these cows.

But...only if the cameras could catch hold of the culprits and punish them too!! Alas, it can only catch the images. What naked eyes could not do, what proof and evidence could not do, we expect the mute CAMERA to do!. Just like our authorities, the camera too could look on the other side when something untoward happens. When there is no intention to enforce rule and law, when there is no chance for fair treatment, when the law makers only break them, what do we expect these CAMERA's to do? In any case we have a much vigilant BD working full time, what more can we ask for?
