Doha, May 2: ‘Doha’s Got Talent’, exclaimed an enthusiast while moving out of the mini hall of Skills Development Centre here on Friday April 29 evening. He was one among the large number of people who witnessed the second-leg of annual talent show organized by Mangalore Cricket Club. Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC) has been in the forefront of promoting talents in various ways for the last several years and has carved a niche for itself among the Doha Mangalorean community.
While the children were the centre of attraction during the evening competitions, adults too were not left behind as they displayed their mastery over public speaking and singing in Konkani.
The evening began with a prayer by Daphney Lobo followed by the welcome note by the MCC president Richard D’Souza. The judges of the evening were introduced by Hema Fernandes.
The first competition of the evening ‘Story Telling’ in Konkani made quite a few elders nostalgic as they heard little angels narrating stories, some of which have been doing rounds for generations together. “I have heard most of these stories earlier too. But when I heard them again today, I could not but remember my childhood days when my mother and granny never let me off to go to bed without listening to a story. No one can narrate these stories better than these children,” said a person from the audience.
The ‘Story-telling’ was followed by elocution competition in Konkani for the children on the topic ‘My Hobbies’. The way children presented their speeches without stage fear or confusion, left all astonished. The happiness was to be seen on the faces of the proud parents of these children as they saw their little ones displaying remarkable poise and talent in front of the capacity crowd.
While the children were truly the ones who stole the limelight, the adults too did not lag much behind. For the first time in its history, MCC had organized ‘Pick-N-Speak’ contest in Konkani for those who are 18 and above. The contest brought to light some hidden talents among the Doha Mangaloreans as the contestants came up with remarkable oratory skills and made the contest successful. These competitions were judged by Henry D’Souza and Thimothy Veigas. Henry spoke on behalf of the judges and invited all adults to come forward and join the toastmasters to improve their public speaking skills.
This was followed by the Instrumental completion where the young kids displayed their music talent to the audience. Lastly, Konkani singing competition was conducted. Children and adults with their amazing talent coupled with melodious singing regaled the audience. Each and every contestant was greeted with huge round of applause and as they wound up their singing, the audience again went berserk with applause. It really showed that Doha has seriously got immense talent and the only thing these participants required is a platform to perform and display their hidden gifts. The singing competition that comprised of Duet and group category too was well received. Some of the golden oldies that were sung were greeted with appreciation by the responsive audience.
The judges for the Instrumental & Singing competitions were Edward Sequeira, Joyce Mascarehnas and Preema Pinto. Joyce spoke on behalf of the judges and gave some useful tips to the participants to improve their performance in the coming years.
Registration desk was handled by Prashanth D’Silva and Jessy Mendonca while the time keepers were Patrick and Neil D’Souza. Volunteers of the evening were Sunil D’Silva, Roshan Pinto, Sabinash D’Souza and William Lobo.
MCC Cultural secretary Reena Castelino announced the results and invited the winners to the stage for the photo session. The host of the evening Shalini Monteiro kept the evening lively with her remarkable oratory and leadership qualities. The evening came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by the MCC General secretary Riana Pinto.
