Mangaluru, Oct 16: KPCC coordinator, and former corporator, Prathibha Kulai has lashed out at the BJP and the district administration for conducting midnight raids on houses of Surathkal toll gate protesters and for issuing notices to the protesters.

In a Facebook post, she said the BJP MLA, MP have lost their mental balance in the matter pertaining to the Surathkal toll gate issue.

"It is a shame and disgrace that the district administration is trying to suppress the toll gate agitation that has been planned for October 18 by sending police personnel home and for slapping notices," she wrote.

Kulai said she is a social worker and not a terrorist.

"As a responsible citizen of this country I respect the law of the land. Last night at 11.45 pm, five police personnel of Surathkal police station landed at my home in Kulai which has been captured on a CCTV camera," she wrote in her post.

The former corporation said her 74-year-old mother-in-law was scared to see the police behaviour. "Since I wasn't home the notice was not taken," she further wrote in her post.

Prathibha Kulai also wondered if Mangaluru was truly safe and secure. "Are the women in Mangaluru safe? Can anyone come knocking on the door of a house where the women live at midnight? What kind of democracy is this?" she questioned.

Police commissioner clarifies

In the backdrop of some provocative calls and statements given by some major participants of the agitation due on October 18 regarding Surathkal toll gate, preventive proceedings have been carried out on some individuals for which notices have been issued to appear before DCP who is an executive magistrate under 107 CrPc, police commissioner N Shashi Kumar has said.

"Privacy of every individual is to be respected and more so for women. I have asked ACP North Mahesh Kumar to enquire into the issue and submit a report to me. Everyone in the commissionerate is a witness to the fact that we have facilitated every democratic and peaceful protest or agitation of any individual organisations or party," he added.

Notices have been issued on 16 people, Shashi Kumar infomed.
