Mangaluru, Oct 18: The protest against Surathkal toll gate here on Tuesday October 18, turned worse after the protesters managed to cross the barricade put near NITK restricting them. The protesters, after crossing the barricade, reached the toll.
Congress leader Mithun Rai climbed the toll gate and raised slogans. Many protesters were arrested.
Former MLC Ivan D’Souza, Muneer Katipalla, Imthiyaz, Sunil Kumar Bajal, former MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, Dinesh Ullepady and others were arrested.
A window pane of the toll gate was damaged.
Vehicle movement was interrupted for about 30 minutes due to the protest.

Mangaluru, Oct 18: Security has been beefed up at Surathkal toll gate ahead of the massive protest by Toll Gate Virodhi Horata Samithi Surathkal and like-minded organisations here on Tuesday October 18.
Mangaluru city police commissionerate police civil staffs, CAR, KSRP police has been deployed at the sensitive spot.
On September 13, the committee had given a deadline to the government to scrap Surathkal toll gate by October 18. If the government fails to adhere to their request, they had warned to lay siege to the toll gate on October 18.
Recently, a meeting was conducted at the DC’s office by NHAI who assured to resolve the toll gate issue within 15 to 20 days.
Earlier, police had cracked down on protesters of the Surathkal toll gate and have slapped notices forcibly on more than 100 of them by conducting a search and barging into homes in a midnight operation.
The police had ordered the protesters to furnish a bond for Rs 2 lac along with a government bail and also to report themselves at the police commissioner's office on Monday.
