Veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge elected new Congress president

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): Mallikarjun Kharge was on Wednesday elected as the new Congress President after he received 7,897 votes, while his rival Shashi Tharoor managed to secure only 1,072.

Although the counting of votes has ended, official results are yet to be announced.

A total of 416 votes were declared invalid.

Kharge's supporters broke out in dance and burst crackers outside the AICC headquarters here.

He is likely to take charge next week a day after Diwali (October 23).

For the first in over two decades, the Congress will get a non-Gandhi President.

No intention to provoke the BJP haters. But electing Kharge means Congressis voted for status-quo. Umpteen elections lost, nothing happened. Stalwarts left, nothing happened. But loyalists who have no other identity but as Gandhi loyalist stayed. Kharge is one of them. If Congressis had some vision, they would have voted for Shashi Tharoor (at the very least a CV comparison to decipher who was competent for the job was desirable). With Tharoor, Congress would have had realistic chance to take on history. With this election, it is clear that Kharge will not get honorable exit. One election anywhere in India lost by Congress, Kharge will have to step down. That yardstick did not apply on the Gandhi family's ownership on the party for decades. Congress desperately needed a out of the box solution to stay afloat. They missed the bus big time by choosing Kharge. No, Kannadiga or not, does not matter. Congress boasts itself to be national party, which it is not anymore. Which state the president belonged does not matter, just like Gandhi surname and their association with any state did not matter.

The detractors and haters of congress will never stop undermining the election of Congress President! Congrajulations to Malikarjun Khargeji on well deserved and well earned victory! I trust and hope He becomes the first Prime Minister from majority community(Dalit) which has been oppressed and marginalised all these years. This is the victory of 70percent Dalits+SC+STandOBC.

It sends signals that Congress is not a 'youngster' supporting party. No wonder all youngsters are leaving for greener pastures. This strategy dents the 'future' of any political parties. Ironically this is what BJP exactly wants in Congress.

Such action should have been taken much earlier. Whatsoever, we can expect congress party rejuvenation under the guidance and leadership of Mr. Kharge, rather than likely demise of the ages old congress party. Good luck Congress.

Wish Shashi Taroor had won. He was well deserved and suited the party right as an real 'outsider' and would have run the party like a Coporate. The victory of a 'Gandhi Approved' candidate that too by such a huge margin is not good for the party. It mirrors the fact that Congress does not want to change. The BJPs job is made even more easier.

Kiran Poojary, you either be happy because a Kannadiga has become a political party chief as well as for the dynasty has ended by the process. Or, don't drag the regionalism at all, and continue voting for a party that has a party chief appointed by insiders disregarding democratic process. Don't do meaningless celebrations man. Is anybody questioning you about how a famous father's son has become Cricket Board's decision maker once again ?
