Mangaluru: Refusal by airlines – Setback for fish export in coastal area

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 20: Though the state government is saying that it is giving special emphasis on fish export through aircrafts from the international airport here, the obstacles are not yet cleared for smooth air shipping of fresh fish.

Andhra Pradesh is leading the fish export in the country. Recently, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai had informed that a team will be sent from the state to Andhra Pradesh to study the export sector there and implement the same in Karnataka. However, as the airlines are denying to carry fresh fish, the exporters of city are not able to send the same, though there is huge demand for fresh fish overseas. The fish exporters are surprised that the concerned authorities are not bothered to solve the issue.

Five years ago, fish was being exported from the city through Air India Express flight. However, the airlines people stopped carrying fish alleging that packages are getting leaked. The airport officials are ready to export fish from the international airport here. However, they say that airlines should agree as they are the carriers.

From the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, 69000 metric tonnes of fish is being exported annually. This is done through ships at NMPT. It is possible to preserve refrigerated fish for nine months. However, fresh fish has shelf life of only four days. So it needs to be shipped through aircraft.

At present fish from Mangaluru and Malpe is sent to Bengaluru, Goa, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram through trucks and exported overseas. This involves more expenditure and time.

Minister Angara said, “I will try to resolve the issue that prevents export of fish from Mangaluru international airport.”

“It is not right to have created obstruction for fish business on the pretext of silly reason. We are committed to pack the fish as per international standards. Air cargo facility for fish should be introduced from Mangaluru at the earliest,” says a fish export entrepreneur.

All over the world airlines allow frozen fish in sealed box. I have carried it in Jet Airways earlier. But now, it is Indigo and GoAir which act funny even if the fish is packed in thermocol box and sealed.. All passengers should forcibly carry the fish as there is no law that it is not allowed especially when fully packed and sealed.

Main reason airlines do not allow fresh fish is because of water leakage. Our fish exporters should do some due diligence and use proper leak-proof containers for packing ship. But, they want to earn a lot from exports, but won't spend little extra for such packaging.

Let the local people enjoy the fish. Why should it be exported when there is good demand locally ? Secondly there is good reason in airlines refusing the fish cargo. Fish rots very quickly and the ice leaks. It would be very difficult for them to keep the aircraft clean.

Rems Mangalore ,nowadays there are methods and ways to keep it fresh from beginning itself Only we want it.There is a saying in Konkani When God was giving devil was not allowing. So right from beginning at the fishing port itself refrigirate fish deep so that it doesnt spoil.Have a plan for everything .Not that start thinking when fish starts stinking.Plenty of fresh fish is there in Mangalore and good fish .Airlines do resist of course when water start dribbling .It should be fished at night or early morning so that process end before hot sun starts.

Local men run after young couples to see if they belong to same religion or different. They are reserved by political parties to say slogans during rallies. Our port-occupied industries employ staff from North, NE or even Nepal. Expectation of their performance quality too shop be weighed by how much we pay them. Sow cheap, reep cheap.

We the people are to be blamed for this as there is no unity among us. We are busy in communal, religious and in spreading fate. The result of which is here for all to see. Lack of unity will derail us. We have allowed political and religious leaders to rule us. We have forgotten that humanity is the supreme religion. Until all of us realize this it will be too late.

Package getting leaked is indeed a concern he exporters have to address. Exporters shoucl not cut corners to save some money and indirectly, cause unhygienic atmosphere in the flight. This is a passenger flight not Cargo. Extra precautions have to be taken. Its not like transporting fish in City bus keeping the butti on top of that Stepni tyre behind sending waste water and stench through the bus.

Mangalore is the most neglected place when it comes to getting any facilities. From airlines to railways and other stuff. No one is bothered. Our people and representatives have become so lethargic that they have time only in religion, hijab , halal and jatka.....
