Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, May 9: A district level mega convention of Billavas was organized on Sunday May 8 at Lord Vishwanath Temple, Katapadi in the taluk. Show your dedication, sincerity, and willingness to dedicate yourselves to the task of achieving progress of your brethren,” he exhorted.

MP, D V Sadanand Gowda, while noting that there is no dearth of leaders, organizations and other facilities a,pmg the Billavas, lamented lack of unity among the people of the community.

S P Poojary, don't comment without knowing & learning the history of Billavas properly. There have been dominating group in Billavas which was interested only in bringing up their family & not the community. Therefore Sri B. Janardhan Poojary took some measure steps to eradicate this serious problem which could have brought our community into major disaster.

And there is no doubt that Congress has said and have done what it has said for not only to Billava Community but also to the entire Backward Caste, Schedule Caste & Scheduled Tribes. Smt Indira Gandhi has done whatever it is required to bring back the glory of all these classes which had been lost due to some of the upper caste people.
BJPhas failed to deliver atleast One Billava MP from the two constituencies of UndividedDakshinaKannadaDistrict i.e Mangalore & Udupi. BJP has also failed to safeguard the interest of the backward caste people in this Coastal Belt. Where it may be the issue of Bhojan Panthi in temples, or getting proper respect to the backward castes to play Yakshaghana in the temple. In Sri Mandarthi Temple when Billavas were not allowed to perform Yakshaghana it was Sri B. Janardhan Poojary who fought against it and made billavas to play yakshaghana. No BJPians, RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal leaders spoke against this. Our Billava Brothers had given blood to bring BJP to power in this coastal belt. But what we got in return is no support from all these organization when we were spiritually insulted in the divine places.

Because BJP does not want any kind of rivalry from upper caste b'cos it is filled with upper caste Leaders. This is only one example, there are various examples, because of which not only billavas but also the Bunts, Mogaveers, Devadigas, Bhandaries, Kulals, Moolyas and other Backward castes are undergoing these spiritual & mental tortures in the society. Only b'cos we are Non-Veg & we are not wearing Janivara. Therefore all OBC, SC, ST has to be alert from Now-Onwards.

Dear Janardhan Poojary – You have said that the main problem the Billavas are facing is that the members of the community have been fighting among themselves. Very valid and sensible statement, but do some introspection yourself in this regard.

Are you not part of the group politics? Being the tallest senior political leader of Billava community from Mangalore-Udupi belt you could work towards the unification of various groups and stop them fighting. Why we need two community organization like Billava Maha Mandal (headed by Jaya Suvarna to with which you are associated) and another Akhila Bharat Billava Union (headed by Navin Suvarna). If you are honest to what you say you should work for the unification of these groups and make them stop fighting. We all know that in unity lies the strength and if all the Billavas are united today then the social justice to community members could be achieved easily.

Another question - did you not fight your own community member (?) when you sought Congress ticket to contest from Mangalore Lokasabha last election? If you are true and honest to what you say today, you should have magnanimously supported other younger Billava candidate who had much better chance (since you have lost 3 times from there). You were not ready for any sacrifice to your own community member. In the end neither you won (Billavas apparently did not support you) nor allowed another community member to try his luck. Preaching is easy but practicing is difficult

Dear Raj and harish poojary, bangalore. If someone evaluate today, the Billavas are moving backward than forward in leadership, political and social level. During 1974, the billawa community benefited due to land reform act, as many billawas were tilting the land and they were leaders in Coastal belt of Karnataka. Till early 2000 there were less billawas who had criminal records than today. They have been brainwashed by vested interests, used them for their own selfish ends.

In semi govt. offices, many young billawas still work as temporary staff where as others have been made permanent, mentioning the performance is not satisfactory. This fact is truth and one will come to know the mental harassment while working and the partiality.

Billawa leaders and elders should work harder than before to motivate, guide the youth so that the billawa society will generate more entrepreneur, academics, professionals, etc so that the community will be proud. Be independent so that one will be proud of oneself. Wish good luck to Billawa community

    Dear Mr. RAJ ULLAL, Mangalore/Bangalore,

You being a staunch BJP supporter may not agree with my views. It is open secret that BJP is using poor class like Billava Youths in street fights (by poisoning their minds) in the name of the religion. Many of the poor families are shattered today as most of the youths have already spoiled their career because of these street fights. With the exploitation of poor communities like Billavas, powerful people are enjoying the power in BJP and Government. As far as I know Congress has never used Billavas in any street fights but on the contrary helped them to be in the forefront of power.

Here is the reply to your question ‘ What type of opportunities congress have given to billavas? ‘

    Central minister from the community
State minister from the community (Vasanth Salian),
State president of KPCC from the community
General Secretary/Secretary of AICC (Janradhana Poojary, BK Hariprasad & Sorake),
Member of Congress working committee (JP),
District Congress President (Late Mr. Vishwanath, Gopal Poojary)
Number of Block Presidents in DK,
    Mayor of Mangalore (Ramesh Kotian),
Chairman of MUDA(Mr. Tejomaya) and the list goes on.

I have not included the list of MPs or MLAs in the above list. Caste politics is done by both Congress and BJP. Only difference is in one case, rich and powerful are benefited and in the other poor and downtrodden are benefited. So if caste politics bring the poor people to forefront then why should not we support that party?

How many Billavas have been made ministers in BJP? How many of them are made chairman of the boards? Do you think that giving one or two posts (Sunil Kumar) to Billavas is enough? As indicated by you, Billavas in BJP are mostly limited to only ZP/TP because there is no other way to win the elections in Billava dominated area.

Now tell me which party is better for Billavas? Billava community is divided now and hence BJP is getting the advantage. If unity can be brought within Billavas then no political party can fool them. Then they can be the leaders of their own right.

    RAJ ULLAL & harish poojary,
FYI once a upon a time there were 2 MPs and 7 congress MLAs were Billavas, I would remind you guys a incident which happened in Mandarthi temple in brahmavara where our Billava artist were not allowed to do stage performance because we are from lower caste this happened in early 2000s, at that time none of the so called Hindu organisation such as RSS Bajrang Dal did not opened their mouth supporting Billavas, The only man spoke aginst this injustice is our leader Mr.Janardhan Poojary and got us the justice, all other organisations were just watching the tamasha, organisations such as BD and RSS are just using billavas for riot.
Harish If you dont known the history keep quite, Once upon time we billavas were not allowed to enter temple, we have to thank Mrs Indira Gandhi who fought for us.
Today many have forgotten one fact especially the billava youths in the villages....... at one time if any billava approached banks for loans they we were not allowed to enter the bank premises.....After Mr.Janardhan Poojary became the Finance Minister he not only gave loans, he bought the banks to our door steps.....In those days many Bank managers refused to give loans, Mr.Poojary used to personally visit the Branches and give good treatment to the Bank managers.....that is why most of the managers don't like him. Not only for Billavas he is the back bone of all backward class.
Harish ask your elders how was our life before, I hope you will get a clear idea.

ISMAIL K PERINJE, PERINJE/YANBU-KSA you comment that Rookmaya Poojary was sidelined by BJP as he is a billawa. Also do you know that during 1999 and 2004 election Mr Poojary was not given the ticket from congress to contest from Mangalore. So do you say that congress has sidelined billawas? This time during 2009 MP election congress could'nt find any suitable candidates so atlast decided to go with Mr Poojary. Also during 2004 MP election Mr Danajay Kumar was not given ticket from BJP. So you say that BJP has done injustice to jain community? Also in Karkala Mr KP Shenoy was not given ticket from BJP for the second time? So do you say that BJP has done injustice to konkani community?

Satish Kunder, Mangalore/Kuwait what type of opportunities congress have given to billawas? They remember billawas only during the time of elections and later on forget them. Then again they remember about billawas only during next elections, but now the people of our districts have realised the caste politics of congress and so are voting for BJP. Regarding BJP giving opportunities to billawas. I think you didnot notice the recent ZP/TP elections results. In that election result you can see that most of the candidates won from the BJP ticket are billawas. Also as Mr Sudarshan Shetty told that Karnataka BJP yuva morcha president itself is Billawa Mr Sunil Kumar of Karkala.

There is sense in comments made by Mr. ISMAIL K PERINJE & Mr. Harold D'cunha,

If we take out the history, we find that Billavas were exploited again and again by the rich and powerful and this continued till 1970s. Even though Billavas were powerful community, these vested interests exploited the goodness of Billavas and grabbed the huge land area from original landowners Billavas by luring them with hard cash as loan (with compounded compound interest) and finally making them indebted in the vicious circle. Hence this powerful community which was once Baidyas (Doctors) and warriors of Tulu Nadu got pushed back as socially backward class.

After 1970 to 1990 Billavas became politically strong & united and this helped many of them to reach powerful positions. After the Rath Yatra, right wing elements in the undivided Dakshin Kannada were successful in dividing the people on communal lines and this included Billava Community too. Billavas normally supported Centrist politics but this changed since 1990. No doubt Congress gave lot of opportunities to Billavas but the same can not be said about BJP. On the strength of Billavas, powerful communities are calling the shots today and keep the Billavas in good humour by luring them one or two posts somewhere. Billavas should understand that they will never be given commanding position in BJP and only rich and powerful will be at the helm of affairs. As things stand today, Billavas are being exploited once again and progress they made in politics during 1970 to 1990 is being negated.

Billavas should understand that if they are united, nobody can exploit them and also they can have the major say in the politics of undivided Dakshin Kannada.

Kiran,Managalore, you have a problem with relating BJP party to Hindu religion. But my perspective the word Hindu stands for universal brotherhood and way of living and culture of Great India. You and like minded friends are very narrow minded and still lives in 19th century which is a great set back to ONE INDIA.

As far gentlemen,Sudharshan Shetty,Mangalore, his comments are acceptable for the arguement sake in which still I differ!Rukmaya Poojari of Bantawal one of the few persons who brought MLAs for BJP in Karanataka is now sidelined!I can give lot of examples but I did give Prabhakar Bangera,Ex MLA of Belthangady Taluk because there was a golden chance and reason to give ministership in Dosti Govt but failed to do so by giving new comer of another community which I would not like to name him. Therefore mixing great HINDU religion with State political party(I would say BJP party limited to certain states only and upcoming results of States election result may WRITING ON WALL for Kiran,Managalore to introspect)not fair.

I am very glad that Billava community has realized the importance of unity. Also realising their weakness like addiction to alcohol, poverty and exploitation by the vested interests for their own selfish end.
Wake up Billavas, Wake up. The exploiters will use and throw you in the dust bin. Before realizing this, most of the youths have already spoiled their career. In majority of cases, especially in communal riots, the highest number of cases are filed against Billava community in DK. This clearly shows they have been exploited and lead to a wrong path. Leaders please work harder about your community, so that the youth will lead constructive society and good family life.

Billavas have great history and were original inhabitants of undivided Dakshin Kannada. They were culturally rich and were warriors being descendants of Koti Chennaya clan. Even though they had resources of richness, their love for liquor and the exploitation of their goodness had made them poorer by loosing the large part of the land they had owned. Even though Billavas were equivalent to Kshatriyas in the north, they are equated with the socially backward class by making them poorer by the rich and powerful.

It was Brahmashree Narayan Guru who changed the thinking among Billavas and brought them to the main stream. Still there are many Billavas below poverty line and it is the duty of the Billava unions to help these people to get good education and job.

I have seen Billava Unions in Mumbai but sadly these are controlled by few individuals mainly hotel lobby. I was invited to be the part of the Billava Union number of times but I found it is not suitable place where we can carry out the social service freely. I am for unified mankind and these Billava Unions should not lead to caste separation but unifying force among all castes and creeds.

There were many Billava leaders who excelled in many fields and of all Shri Janardhana Poojary stands tall. It is his responsibility to bring all Billava factions together and guide them to work together in national building.

Congress Party has given them rightful dues by making J.Poojari Union Minister and Vinaya Kumar Sorke as leader with post. However J.Poojari was let down by thier own community inspite of Cong awarding tickets to several time in Mangalore Const.Where as Bjp having good support from them did not give any post or minister so far(PRABHAKAR BANGERA of BELTHANDY denied ministerial post even he had won three consecutive times in BJP ticket-during Dosti govt)
