Beltangady, Nov 1: K Somanatha Nayak (71), president of Nagarika Seva Trust surrendered to taluk court on Monday in connection with the case related to false propaganda in social media and statement against Shree Kshethra Dharmasthala, Dharmadhikari and the organizations run by them.

The court ordered Somanath Nayak to be sent to three months in prison and pay Rs 4.5 lac as compensation.

Somnath presented himself in front of Justice Vijayendra, along with his lawyer on the afternoon of Monday. More than 70 supporters including former MLA Vasant Bangera, thinkers Laxmisha Tolpady, Ranjan Rao Perdoor, leaders of DSS and activists of some organizations accompanied Somnath to the court.

Nayak was posting false propaganda against Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala inspite of courts order. This was brought to the notice of the court by Shree Kshethra Dharmasthala administration.

The court had a lengthy inquiry and held Somanath Nayak as guilty and sentenced him to three months in prison and ordered him to pay Rs 4.5 lac compensation to Shree Kshethra.

Nayak had applied to high court and superme court against the order of taluk court. However, the verdict of lower court was upheld by both high court and the Supreme Court.

The judge agreed to the request made by lawyer for convict Somanath that the fine amount will be paid within 90 days. Later Somanath left for Mangaluru prison accompanied by Amin from the court.

Though we have freedom of speech that does not mean that you can do anything in life. Freedom of speech has limitations Its not correct to defame a good person like Sri Hegde at all. I think the honourable court has taken the right decision against this man

My observation is that Nayak was sent to prison, for the contempt of court. By not adhering to restraining order, he has broken the law, so major offense. This judgment is not against his writings. His writings were not banned by courts.
