Karkala: Steep increase in cattle feed price - Dairy farmers in dire straits

Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (MS)

Karkala, Nov 4: The price of cattle feed has been increasing continuously for the past few months. This has made dairy farmers' lives miserable as they are unable to balance production cost of milk and the income from selling it.

The rate of animal feed including dry grass has skyrocketed. This is having a direct impact on the milk producers. Milk federations have fixed a price of Rs 36 per liter including Rs 5 per litre support price from the government. The present milk price of Nandini brand is Rs 44. Government needs to increase the purchase price of milk producers.

Due to incessant rains this year, the production of cattle feed is also low. That is why the price is increasing considerably. Nandini Gold feed was costing Rs 990 per 50 kilo bag in June. The price rose to Rs 1,065 in September and now to Rs 1,190. This means that the price has increased by Rs 210 in just four months. The rate of Nandini Bypass cattle feed is quoting around Rs 1,310.

Ranjit, a milk producer in Udupi says, “Dairy farmers are distraught due to the increase in the prices of cattle feed. Government has to increase the purchase price of milk to Rs 50 per liter. This will give profit to dairy farmers also.”

You farmers are selling your product to Nandini for half rate. During Lockdown, your milk was even not accepted because there wasn't demand. Many of you threw it away because you couldn't find customers on your own. You should unite and create your own society and sell the milk for full rate than succumbing to Nandini organisation's monopoly. At-least people will get full cream milk than what is sold after skimming all fat.

Sameer, You hit the bullseye. Religion, politics and economic policies are entirely different for BJP. Speeches on ban of cow slaughter is for votes, export of cow meat is for economy. Even from BJP, many run beef stalls in North East states. Hindus do cow meat export business and consume cow meat, and at the same time they participate in anti cow slaughter protests. It is all in the game which is called shameless double standard of BJP and the organisations referred to above by you.

Dear Sameer, Riyadh, You have a point. They should provide cattle feed to cows. But will you please stop thieving in broad daylight and/or by brandishing swords? Sitting in Riyadh, where are you getting your daily supplement of beef, from US or Australia? Incidentally, there cattle feed is composed of bone powder derived from cows whose meat was sold, but bone could not be disposed. Do you know the source of mad cow disease? It was this practise. Alas, you don't have to know about it, but only steal for your meal.
