Congress lands in copyright soup over use of 'KGF Chapter 2' music in Bharat Jodo Yatra promos

Bengaluru, Nov 4 (IANS): Amid Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress party has landed in legal trouble with a music label over copyright violations. MRT Music, owners of KGF2 music rights, on Friday filed a case here against the Indian National Congress (INC) for copyright infringement.

Bangalore-based record label MRT Music stated on Friday that audio visual advertisements featuring Rahul Gandhi released by INC for their marketing campaign had used music from MRT Music without seeking any permissions.

M. Naveen Kumar, Partner, MRT Music, stated, "An entity such as the INC has to set an example for the Indian citizens, however in this scenario, it itself is violating the laws of the land and infringing our copyright and intellectual property rights, which we have acquired through huge investments. This act on the part of INC sends a completely wrong signal to the Indian public and is completely contrary to the efforts of safeguarding our copyrights. This grave infringement will be challenged by us to the fullest effort."

MRT Music claims to hold music rights of over 20,000 tracks in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil and has invested huge sums of money to acquire classic old music to one of the biggest movies of the year 'KGF Chapter 2' in Hindi.

The record label alleged that the Indian National Congress has picked up the songs from this movie and without seeking MRT Music's permission/license in any manner whatsoever has used these songs to create their marketing videos of their very latest "Bharat Jodo Yatra" campaign featuring Rahul Gandhi.

"The INC has created a video by unlawfully downloading and synchronising and broadcasting the songs pertaining to the movie KGF - Chapter 2 in Hindi and portraying it to be owned by the INC. They have also used a logo namely "Bharath Jodo Yatra" in the said video and have broadcasted the same on their official social media handles," counsel for the complainant noted.

MRT Music's counsel Narasimhan Sampath stated "The present complaint has been filed against the Indian National Congress represented by its General Secretary, Sri Jairam Ramesh, Smt. Supriya Shrinate, Sri Rahul Gandhi for infringement of copyrights owned by MRT Music."

Based on the complaint submitted by MRT Music, the police have proceeded to register a FIR in Crime No. 362/2022 for offences punishable under sections 403, 465 and 120B r/w Section 34 of the IPC and under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and under Section 63 of the Copyrights Act, 1957 as against the Indian National Congress and the aforementioned individuals who have been arrayed as Accused no. 1 to 3 respectively.

The complaint mainly pertains to the unlawful fraudulent and illegal actions of the members of the steering committee in so far as violating the copyrights owned by MRT Music.

MRT Music has filed the present complaint only to enforce its statutory rights and has no intentions to tarnish the image of any political party, the counsel stated.

As part of his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi had traversed Karnataka over three weeks in October.

    Last 8 years, Rahul Gandhi's character has been assassinated and he was branded with all negative names. Still, he has come out from all these insults and moved forward. Bharat Jodo Yatra, he walked more than 1000 km and led this movement. As the Bharat Jodo Yatra is attracting huge crowd. the opposition will create many issues, and this is a classic example of it.

    @Nithin, It is an irony that people become bhakths of a person who lies incessantly. So, what is so bad about his speeches? And I do like his speeches, because there are no lies and hates in his speeches. Media always highlights and make fun of him; whereas so called Gurus and Chanakyas have delivered speeches nationally and internationally which were big blunders & lies.

    @Harold, If you observe RaGa it is evident that he wants to be in limelight but do not want to take responsibility of anything. So he opted to take road show and Jodo yathra for which there is no accountability. He acts too funny at times and these days people circulate all such funny character video clips. He cannot face questions and can't answer any questions properly because he doesn't have proper information with him and not aware of ground realities. He gives pose for camera with some poor but has no idea how to eradicate poverty, unemployment, social injustices like lack of education to children of downtrodden, tribals etc. Probably to cover-up his failures as party head, they made Kharge the party president and which further brought bad name to RaGa. So it is not someone is tarnishing image of Rahul but he himself creating such. At crucial times when he should come to forefront to fight he disappears and goes to abroad. So he is being considered as a man who runs away from responsibilities.

    Whatever hurdles possible being thrown at Rahul Gandhi ..and his Yatra .. Copyright used for commercial benefits without permission yes there possibly is a case but debatable .. many functions .. jatras .. etc play .. In any case someone has thought out how to damage ..desperate .... Rahuls dress controversy is over because bjp leaders themselves found with more expensive dresses .. other attire .. shoes .. sunglasses .. watches .. etc etc BJP nervous of Yatra getting huge response .. Overall In the last weeks from beginning of Yatra millions have participated.. Only Godi media does not report .. But like the saying .. dogs bark but the caravan moves on .....

    Rahul Gandhi set out on a mission for a common cause - to fight against joblessness and other problems faced by a common man. Thousands were drawn towards the march because the problems he is voicing against are genuine. I agree, his organisers should have ensured necessary permissions but I see a strong BJP conspiracy in tossing hurdles on the path of the march by enticing the Film's connections to file a case. Carry on kutantris, no matter what you do, people have come to know your ill will.

    Che ! What has happened?? Please allow Rahul to walk and wave without hindrance. Let him go on walking.If he had walked, talked, dressed like Yasaa the Hero then it would have been total infringement. But no ! He hasn't. Many were comparing him to Saddam Hussein of Iraq. That does not mean Iraqis can put case against him- right?? All these things Music Company should understand. Put case against Ramesaa, Jairamaa, Shrillnate or anybody but please let Rahul walk.
