Mangaluru: Christmas round the corner - Rising prices of eggs causes concern

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 18: Wholesale price of eggs which was around Rs 5.40 per piece has suddenly shot up to Rs 5.90. Though it is usual for the egg prices to shoot up in the month of December as Christmas is celebrated and eggs are extensively used in the preparation of cakes. However, this year the prices have gone up in November itself. There is a high possibility that the price may reach Rs seven per piece in December.

Eggs are in high demand these days as they are given to children of Anganwadi centres twice a week, five days a week to children suffering from malnutrition, 25 eggs a month to anganwadi teachers, assistants, pregnant women and nursing mothers. In addition, eight eggs are provided for children studying in Grade one to eight in schools from the month of November till March. The closure of large poultry farms is also another reason for the price of eggs to sky rocket.

The competition between line salesmen of eggs is absent these days. Just a week ago, there was fierce competition and the egg tempos were selling eggs at lower prices than their competitors. But now with the demand increasing, the rates are constant with all the suppliers of eggs.

Only because local fish processing units have closed down and the eggs are not going to outstation states, the egg price has still not gone up too high. However, according to an egg merchant, the price of one egg will surely reach around Rs seven in the month of December.
