Mangalore, May 18: A car moving from Manjeshwar to the city, and a government bus moving towards Kasargod, got involved in a head-on collision at Naganakatte in Tokkottu on national highway at around 6.30 am on Wednesday May 18.

Two persons, including the driver and an occupant of the car in question, died in the accident. They have been identified as Mayyaddi (36) and Moosa (36), the driver and occupant, respectively and also neighbours in Manjeshwar.

After they were critically injured in the accident, they were taken to a hospital in Tokkottu, but were referred to a hospital with advanced facilities, because of lack of proper treatment facilities at Tokkottu. They were admitted into a private hospital in the city, but died without responding to efforts made to save them.

The car suffered maximum damage in the accident. A case has been registered with Ullal police station. Investigation has been taken up.

Cars are also driven recklessly even on blind curves and narrow roads leading to accidents. In the present case it appears that the car was over speeding.

Slippery roads during the rainy seasons in our coastal dist is the main reason and reckless driving without following the traffic discipline during overtaking and over confidence makes way into such tradegies.Young lives fall prey due to the reckless bus drivers.

Despite all the efforts of The Traffic Department it is unfortunate that Bus drivers take the law in their own hands and their recklessness has claimed many lives in the past. Once - when there was a move to install speed governors to control the speed of the buses, there was strong opposition from the private owners of the buses and the idea had to be abandoned. Whose lives are the bus drivers and bus owners are playing with?.

Within the City, in an attempt to collect maximum number of passengers it is commonly seen three buses stopped abreast at bus halts and of course the drivers stop the buses anywhere on the roads - very often in the middle of roads to pick up commuters. Can any one question them?

It is expedient that the local police post traffic policemen at important places to keep an eye on the erring drivers. And of course we have the rickshaw drivers who assume that they own he roads and overtake from any side of proceeding cars putting the lives of people to risks. It is also a common experience for the car drivers to see two wheelers overtaking cars on the left.
