M'lore: MCC's Negligence of Street Vendors Plight Results in Dharna

Mangalore, May 19: Demanding proper facilities to run their trade on the roadside, Street Vendors' Union, Mangalore affiliated to CITU, staged a dharna in front of the Mangalore City Corporation on Thursday May 19.

Street vendors led by Sunil Kumar Bajal, honorary president, B M Hassan, president, Mohammed Mustafa, chief secretary and A M Attavulla Kudroli, treasurer converged in front of MCC and expressed their annoyance on MCC administration for its conspiracy by not showing any interest to support the poor vendors.

Addressing the gathering Sunil Kumar Bajal, said that street vending business is an inseparable system of civilized society. Numbers of unorganized poor traders depend on this, who win their bread and butter from this every nook and corner all over the world. Our leaders only taking care of capitalists and in the name of ‘globalization’ life of poor are brought to streets, he stressed.

He also condemned the recent move of MCC ‘Red Van’ through which Civic Tigers removed the street vending shops in city and caused loss to their business.

The protestors demanded the MCC to stop the functioning of ‘Red Van’, compensate the street vendors who are already suffered loss due to evacuation and provide identity card, thereby providing social security to their life.

The protestors submitted the memorandum to MCC commissioner K N Vijayaprakash and their demand to to hold a meeting with the union leaders has also been fulfilled with commissioner agreeing for a meet at 5.00 pm.

Democratic Youth Federation of India district president Muneer Katipalla was present.
