New Delhi, Jun 2 (IANS): Remember Jaya Bachchan as the white sari-clad widow in the superhit "Sholay"? Modern day heroine Kangna Ranaut is set to slip into a similar look for her role in the forthcoming comedy "Double Dhamaal". Director Indra Kumar has clarified that the scene is not meant to hurt anyone's sentiments."Inspired by the iconic widow, played by Jaya Bachchan in 'Sholay', the director has styled Kangna in a similar look for one of the scenes in the film. Instead of wearing normal clothes required for the scene, the director told the stylists to give Kangana an old white sari, just like the ones widows in previous films wore," said a source from the sets.
The movie is co-produced by Reliance Entertainment and Maruti International.
Commenting upon the scene, Kumar said: "It is a spoof, a funny scene all in good humour. We are not making fun of or passing derogatory remarks on Jayaji and 'Sholay'. It's just that in earlier times, all widows were stereotyped.
"They wore white saris and would only cook 'gajar ka halwa' and 'aaloo parathas'. The particular scene (in 'Double Dhamaal'), with all the other actors, is a spoof where she is in a widow's garb with minimal make-up. Otherwise, in the film, she plays a modern, smart and sexy young secretary to Sanjay Dutt."
"Double Dhamaal" also features Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jaffrey, Aashish Chaudhary and Mallika Sherawat. It releases June 24.
