Mangaluru, Jan 18: MLA U T Khader has opposed the state government’s proposal on reducing the legal age for consumption of alcohol from 21 years to 18 years.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, January 18, U T Khader said, "The BJP government’s step to reduce the legal age to consume alcohol from 21 years to 18 years will destroy the young generation. BJP, which speaks about their culture, values of the party, strengthening the country and so on, are indulging in pushing the young generation to consume alcohol at the age of 18. Everyone is trying to create awareness among youths to desist from alcohol and substance abuse but the government is provoking them to consume liquor at a young age. The parents will not spare the government for its proposal."

He also said, "The government will never realize the consequences of this proposal. It is only thinking about how to generate income. The BJP government does not know anything about governance. We demand that the proposal be withdrawn immediately or else the people will get down to the streets to oppose the state government’s move."

I always thought legal drinking age in Karnataka is 18 since 1967 though it is 21 or 25 in many other states in the country. In think in 1967 , the then government amended excise rules to provision for it. But the Excise act (law) as never amended. Hence, to clear the confusion, I think there is a proposal from Excise to fix this. As this is election time, everything is politicized. During Congress government also, I have never seen Excise department preventing people between 18 and 21 going into pubs or bars. So why the fuss ?

I appreciate you Khader saab. People are to make gulp liquor after 70 years if their health is not good. And liquor should not to be sold to the healthy people.....

Unless one is a small boy, who asks for age proof in any wine shop or bar as of now? The shop owners main intention is to maximise their sales, they are least bothered about age; and physically too, there would be hardly any physical difference between an 18year old and a 21 years old! This is another absurd topic to waste time arguing!!

Sir, firstly calling a press conference and opposing, lashing, attacking has never helped the Congress. Wonder how many people are present or see this and what its impact is ? At least myself, have seen this conferences since 2013-14 . All the ones who initiated this , have lost their constituencies and even their careers. So its obvious , this approach does not work! It would only entice a small population of online warriors with fake ids who are really insignificant when the bigger picture is concerned. Its high time you and Congress think out of the box for a new strategy. I believe a massive 'Yatra' sort of thing like RaGA did at a DK level would be ideal. It would be a good platform to launch youngsters, introduce new comers and above all highlight the short comings of the Govt and what the plan is.

Well it makes more sense to place limit on the consumption than re -looking at the age. One should not be allowed to serve anything more than the consumable limit and ofcrse not be allowed to buy as well.. that way it’s a win win situation!

Sri UT Khader should not worry about tipplers. He should ensure "brothers" of certain community are allowed to marry only once instead of 4 times!

Some commentators still supporting Alcohol, even after they witnessed a recent incident where a top executive (Shankar Mishra) in an MNC called Well Fargo; while being intoxicated, urinated on an woman and exposed his private parts in Air India Flight from US to India. I don't know if these people who are supporting Alcohol are waiting for some similar personal experience or what. Everything is right for them if it is part of the sanskar.

We live in weird environment where Alcohol is promoted whereas drugs are banned. Age of marriage is increased whereas age of sex remains below the age of marriage. Extra marital affair is not a crime whereas marriage is considered to be holy. Bestiality is hated whereas homosexuality is promoted. And here are some commentators who hate people who behave inhumane after consuming alcohol and get irritated by someone who opposes the reducing the age limit of consuming alcohol. The essence is that Money is everything for which they wont mind even 18 year olds become drunkards. But they are not considered to be suitable to get married at that age.

Reducing the age limit to 18 is a very good decision by the government. If the students can freely drink beer, they will not be diverted into drugs. Khadar saab should have been well aware of the fact that, though being a haram thing, his fellow men do consume alcohol!

21 should be maintained is what I too feel... Illegally already students consume alcohol... But having a threshold restraint is necessary... Habits can not be eradicated... They can however be controlled... At times we must think beyond tax income and collections...
