Kundapur: Baindoor Resident Looted in Mumbai Train of Rs 1 Lac, Gold

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SB)

Kundapur, Jun 4: An incident wherein a passenger travelling from Mumbai to Kundapur was looted of cash amounting to a lac and gold ornaments after being offered sedative-laced biscuits has occurred near Madgaon. The person is identified as Santosh Shetty, a resident of Kaltodu here. He was travelling by train to attend a relative's wedding with Rs 1 lac and two gold rings.

The theft occured near Madgaon, Goa. It is learnt that a family that was travelling along with Santosh befriended him near Ratnagiri and one among them informed him that he was on the way to his shop at Madgaon and that the other youth was his son.

The person also asked for water from Santosh while having biscuits and offered Santosh some biscuits. Soon after consuming the biscuit Santosh fell asleep and the duo made a hasty retreat after stealing the money and gold ornaments.

However, in a twist in the tale, a fellow traveller, a youth said to be from Kundapur captured the theft with his mobile camera. He also spoke to Santosh's brother and informed that Santosh was in a problem. He further helped Santosh, who was partialy conscious, reach his home by taking him in an autorickshaw on reaching Baindoor railway station. Also, due to countering of the youth, the duo left behind a chain, bracelet, wallet and mobile phone.

On gaining consciousness, Santosh identified the duo captured in his mobile phone as the thieves, following which a case has been registered at the Baindoor police station.

In the background of many such incidents, there have been suggestions that it would be ideal if CCTVs were installed in trains as part of security measure against theft and other crimes.

    Some total strangers will come
across our life and act like
    decent and hospitable people,
but in reality, they may turn as
very tricky and devious to rob
    us in any manner possible.

    In the Indian railway compartments,
along with the sign " less luggage
    more comfort" add the sign
"don't eat or drink anything given
    by the strangers". Perhaps, that
can dissuade the passengers to be
very alert not to make the mistake.

SOLUTION TO THIS KIND OF PROBLEM IS QUITE SIMPLE: JUST INSTALL AUTOMATIC VOICE RECORDING (LIKE HOW THEY HAVE IN AIRCRAFT, BEFORE PLANE TAKES OFF) IN 3 LANGUAGES: HINDI, ENGLISH, AND THE REGIONAL LANGUAGE (OR, LIKE HOW THEY HAVE AUTOMATED RECORDING IN RAILWAY STATION ABOUT A PARTICULAR TRAIN ARRIVING AT A PARTICULAR PLATFORM OR ARRIVING LATE) WHEN TRAIN DEPARTS FROM EVERY STATION. IT SHOULD BE A SHORT, 3 MINUTE MESSAGE WITH ONLY EACH MINUTE ALLOCATED FOR THE 3 LANGUAGES ABOUT THE PERILS OF TAKING FOOD FROM STRANGERS AND OTHER DANGERS ON THE TRAIN. IN THIS WAY,

A REPEATED MESSAGE BY AN AUTOMATED RECORDING SYSTEM CONTROLLED AT THE TRAIN'S ENGINE ROOM WILL HELP PEOPLE / CHILDREN TO REMEMBER TO EAT YOUR OWN FOOD, AND NOT TO TAKE ANY SWEETS OR BISCUITS / COLD DRINKS FROM STRANGERS, HOWEVER CLOSE A FRIENDSHIP THEY DEVELOP, DURING A TRAIN'S LONG JOURNEY!

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS SYSTEM IS THAT ANOTHER SCAM MIGHT HAPPEN IN SOURCING RECORDING MACHINES FOR ALL THE TRAINS - BY OUR GREEDY POLITICIANS.

@ Jagdish, they will leave the camera or mobile as memento...!! It is better to print caution signs on tickets, inside & outside the train and in TV commercials.

Since this is a regular affair in Mumbai Mangalore sector, Why doesn't the railways do not put up warning signs or symbolic pictures of passengers offering food and robbing them? This would at least alert innocent, poor travelers.

Dear Venance, probably no one takes anything from someone they do not know. If for example, as soon as someone enters your compaprtment offers you something you will definitely not take it. Such things happen after they develop few hours of friendship with co passengers. Normally we get into some sort of converstaion with co passengers to pass time and as the time passes we become friends and we are no more unknowns to each other. The people with criminal mentality take advantage of such situations. So single travellers should be cautious not to accept anything even after co passenger/s become familiar during the journey. When we are travelling with family or in group of 2 or more atleast oen member(male) should not accept anything from co passengers even if other members of the family or group accept.

Similar incident happened with my brother who travelled on 20/03/2011 from Mumbai to Surathkal. A tulu speaking youth after befriending him and offered. He felt drowsy immediately after that. After a while when he was semi-conscious he tried to get up. But the youth told him to "you sleep, your station is still very far". Finally when he got up at Udupi, his mobile, handbag with about Rs.5,000/- in cash all was stolen. He got down at Mangalore and lodged a complaint. He has not heard anything from the Railway Police. I think it is better to the culprits photo should be stuck on all the coaches of trains running between Mumbai and Mangalore. These thieves passengers who look soft and alone and they operate in a less crowded trains / season. Passengers should exercise extreme caution when strangers try to be very friendly with their stories.

Repeatedly such incidents are happening in the railways and even in buses and some victims have even died due to overdose.

It has become dangerous for unaccompanied women and children to travel in Konkan railway!

Unfortunately, the security personnel of railways are hand in glove with the robbers. Even the reserved compartments are filled with passengers from lower class and jam packed, with some even occupying the toilets making it very difficult to move around. And there is not a single law enforcing person, either a TC or RPF to check this. It is high time people get together and confront the authorities on this!

In Mangalore railway station I saw a small clip on the TV showing how people cheat the passengers by giving eatables. I strongly recommend that the railway authorities to put banners inside every coach in English, Hindi and Kannada - "Do Not to take any eatables, cold drinks from the co-passenger who tries to be your friend on the way". I hope these banners inside the railway bogie and on the platforms will alert the public. So much robbery is going on Konkan railway belt - why can't railway police do something about it?

First of all, there is no need to travel with Rs.1 Lac cash. Simply depoist in your account and amount can be withdrawn anywhere. Secondly, we have been hearing such cases of offering Fruity and biscuits more than 10-15 years. Its just negligence coz he was travelling alone.

People are fools who are accepting the eatables offered by unknown persons even these things are happening every time while travelling in the Coastal Trains.
Railway Authorities should educate the travellers by announcing - not to accept eatables, juices, coldrinks, water etc offered by unknown people.
