Patna, Jun 10 (IANS): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Thursday described the proposed Seeds Bill as "dangerous" for millions of farmers in the country and warned that it would not only harm their interests, but "destroy agriculture" if passed.

"The proposed Seeds Bill is not only dangerous for farmers, it will destroy the agriculture in the country," he said while launching a statewide campaign organised by the farmers' cell of his Janata Dal-United.

Nitish Kumar said that he had raised his concerns with the central government. "I have requested the central government not to go ahead with the proposed bill in view of the farmers' interests," he said.

He said the bill in its present form would lead to unrestricted commercialisation of seed varieties in the public domain, including those developed by the farmers.

"The proposed bill is not only anti-farmer but also brazenly favours multinationals in the garb of higher productivity. Any attempt to pass the bill in its present form will irrevocably damage Indian agriculture and make the goal of food security a distant dream," he said.

Nitish Kumar said that he was against Bt-maize trial by a multinational company in the state.

"When I was informed that the central government was conducting Bt-maize trial in the state, I asked them to stop it," he said.
