Mangaluru: Accused sentenced to four years imprisonment in fake currency notes case

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Third district and sessions court of the city sentenced accused in fake currency notes case to four years in prison.

Abbas (53), a resident of Bantwal Ira village Darbe House is the accused who is convicted by the court.

Abbas was arrested when he was trying to exchange the fake currency notes (colour photocopy) in Mulky in November 2019. Police confiscated 16 notes of Rs 100 face value from him.

Abbas had visited a photocopy shop at Falnir in the city and got 20 photocopies of Rs 100 face value actual currency notes. When the photocopy shop owner denied doing photocopy of currency notes, Abbas said that it is for the project of that school has given to his children. When the owner did not budge, he threatened and forcefully got the photocopies done.

Out of the 20 fake photocopy notes, Abbas gave one note to a shop at Mulky and bought a bottle of drinking water and a packet of biscuit from other shop by giving another fake note. In one more hotel he had tea and snacks and gave one more fake currency note. He also got change from another person for one more fake note. In total Abbas used four fake notes. The rest 16 remained with him.

Some of the shop owners who received fake notes from Abbas suspected some foul play and informed the police. He was arrested with the help of public.

Chargesheet in this case was filed by inspector Jayarama D Gowda. Justice B B Jakati, who conducted the inquiry, sentenced Abbas to four years in prison and slapped fine of Rs 5000.

Public prosecutor Narayana Sherigar U argued for prosecution.
