India Ranked 4th in List of Most Dangerous Places for Women

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI): The high number of female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking prevalent in India has placed it as the fourth most dangerous place for women in the world, according to a survey.

Afghanistan is the most dangerous place for women followed by Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia in the survey conducted by Thomson Reuters' Trustlaw Women, a hub of legal information and legal support for women's rights.

Three of these countries are in South Asia.

The poll asked 213 experts in the field from five continents to rank countries on their overall perception of danger as well as by six key categories of risk, health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, harmful practices rooted in culture, tradition and/or religion, lack of access to economic resources and human trafficking.

"India ranked fourth primarily due to female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking," the poll said.

In 2009, India's Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta had remarked that at least 100 million people were involved in human trafficking in India, according to the survey.

The CBI has estimated that in 2009 about 90 per cent of trafficking took place within the country and that there were three million prostitutes, of which 40 per cent were children.

Other forms of exploitation include forced labour and forced marriage.

"In India, upto 50 million girls were thought to be 'missing' over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide," as per the UN Population Fund.

    Dear Mr. Kirana, Mangalore,

I quote what I wrote: I heard ONE HIGHER CASTE MAN saying the following. Unquote.

Also I quote what you wrote about my comment: "HIGH CASTE MEN" Unquote.

You have misquoted my comment. Man is singular and Men is plural.

Secondly I have mentioned one higher caste man (entirely to one person)
This is what I heard from one of the higher caste person whom I know well and my words are not manipulated. What is the wrong in what I heard in writing as it is? If you are disturbed/annoyed I am helpless.
I think you will grow now.

Let us face it. This is how the rest of world knows us. This data is not gathered by entering into our households, where the situation is pathetic on an average. This info is gathered based on : The way NRIs treat their wives/girls, the way we behave with visitors in India, the way government policies and actions hold women/girls,the way administration, courts, police treat women/their cases. If we want a better ranking, we need to do some soul searching.

    Dear Mr. HENRY MISQUITH, M'lore/Bahrain,

Your comment is answerable by Mr. Nagesh Nayak.

In my opinion the male citizens of India are responsible for the debacle of women population.
Rampant rape overwhelmingly existing in India, law enforcement and dowry plus social evils are the major factors for the less women population in India.

I heard one higher caste man saying the following.
Ponjokulek pidhai popinakleg dhaig mahareyare jaasthi kalpavni.

Most of the Indians respect women only in the form of idols LAXMI, SARASWATI, PARVATHY etc. But when it comes to real life the people are killing their own daughters in mother's womb.
This is India and this our culture!

    Dear Ismail
I dint mean anything political here. May be you are saying this because I used the word 10 Janpath or Sheela Dixit. My intention here was, Delhi being a national capital, which should be safe & secure for any sort of threats may be against women or national security or installations. But unfortunately when it comes to the record of security towards women, that whole sector scores 0. I dont understand with so much security around why does it still happen there. If you see nay of our national media even today you will find atleast 1 case. There fore am really clueless whats happenig in Delhi. I also said thousands of such case in India goes unaccounted or not reported. I never mean karnataka is safe heaven. Forget lonley women, a couple walking alone in the evenign times in Mlore beach's or parks are not safe. I dint mean moral policing but the threats & grooping eyes.
I also dont agree with your view that empowering women% in the houses of power will make any diffrences to this situation(am not against it). according to me it should be more thougher laws & punishments which would give sleepless nights for a life time for those wannabe criminals also. A saperate fast track probing authority should be appointed to check this situtaion & there should be no mercy at all those people who threaten the peacfull existance of Human being, expecially Womens.

This not just about Noida, Gurgain & Delhi girls/women. It is also the in Mangalore cultural environment.

Why are daughter treated differently than sons? Women are treated more like a possession, a house, a car. Women in most Indian households even if they are working outside the house are expected to cook, take care of kids and the house is maintained. The men sit around, watch sports, read newspapers and not help much at home. This continues from one generation to next.

Also the male/male side of family is honoured more at any function. This happens irrespective of religion or economic status

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The menace it deep rooted.

As you all know Delhi has been nicknamed as the 'rape capital' of India. Goa too is getting into this trend of late. Indian men are notoriously famous for raping foreign tourists. Police and law and order alone cannot stop this phenomena. Sexual harassment in all Indian cities especially in the hotel, modelling and film industry is rampant. There is an urgent need for Indian men to be more civilized and should behave more responsibly.

The Thomson Reuters Trustlaw Women, a hub of legal information and legal support for women's rights conducted a survey on women and has placed it as the fourth most dangerous place for women in the world because of a high number of female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking prevalent in India.

""India ranked fourth primarily due to female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking," the poll said."

India is called the largest democracy on earth.
Indians can vote freely and determine what party or various parties shall form the government.

Around 700 hundred million Indians live in poverty and India's Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta had remarked in 2009 that at least 100 million people were involved in human trafficking in India, according to the survey.
The CBI has estimated that around three million prostitues offer their service in India, of which 40 percent of them are children.
Other forms of exploitation are forced labour and forced marriages.

The social situation of children and women is very serious in India, they are not protected and are exploited.
They are hopeless and have no chance.
It will be important to eradicate corruption and to pass the Lokpal Bill in parliament and to implement it.
Seeing the need of the poor and give up indifference and help them is the first step.
All Indians wish to have a prosperous future.

    Best regards

ARUN CK, MANGALORE,some how you are making this sensitive issue political in which every citizen of India has a role to play.We are boasting ourselves largest living democracy in the world but failed miserably to make INDIA safest place to live with to women folks.I hope and pray this survey would prove wrong.

The Bill of 33% representation in Parliament and Assemblies of states kept frozen due to excuses of different parties!

Even in the party committee or ministerial representation in the cabinet of any party Govts, it is poor to worst!

Unless we prioritize women empowerment in it's real sense,India may lag behind in the list of safest places for women to live, and therefore need a thought from the GOVT as well.

Recently I read an article from India Parenting.
    I am attaching it here:
Don't let your son grow up to be a male chauvinist. Teach him to respect women as equals, so he grows up into a fine young man who will do you proud.

1] Teach your son that he should never, ever strike a girl, no matter what the provocation. If he has a sister who he constantly fights with and they regularly exchange blows, he may not easily grasp the concept that boys don't hit girls. However, as your children grow, they will outgrow the phase of fistfights, so it is important that you inculcate this value in him.

2]Teach your son to question sexism by teaching him to respect his sister as his equal. By doing this, you will be teaching him to respect all women as equals.

3] Make sure your son contributes equally in the household chores. If your daughter lays the table, your son can clear it after the meal. Chores should be rotated, so no child feels that they've got the raw end of the deal.

4] Don't expect your daughter to serve your son, or your son will expect the same of his wife. And if she does not meet his expectations, there will be marital discord. Similarly, teach your daughter to respect herself and her gender by not asking her to iron your son's clothes, or to prepare lunch for him when you or your cook are not available. They can order food from out, or the two off them can scramble some eggs together.

5] Teach your son cooking. Most chefs are men, and many of the world's best cooks are men. You will be doing him a service, not a disservice, by teaching him how to cook. If he's got a sweet tooth, start off by teaching him how to bake a cake… and take it from there. There's nothing effeminate about entering the kitchen. Some of the most macho men I know love to cook, so break out of this old school of thought. You could start off by asking him to watch you bake a cake, and to help you out by whipping the eggs, passing you the sugar, etc. Get him involved, and his interest will rise.

6] Teach your son chess, teach him how to use a computer or teach him a subject at school. Don't expect only your husband to teach him things that require him to use his brains. If you teach him how to, say, use a computer, his respect for you, and consequently, his respect for women, will increase tremendously. The fact that you may be a stay-at-home mother has nothing to do with it. If your son sees you as intelligent, you've done very well! But if he thinks that 'only papa is intelligent' or 'boys are much cleverer than girls', you've got some serious catching up to do.

7] Be a good role model for your child as a father. Respect your wife, and respect her opinions. Avoid cracking sexist jokes with your son, and if you do, make sure that your son knows that they are just jokes. Seek your wife's opinion. As a mother, strengthen your child's opinion of you by not nagging your husband constantly in front of your child, by not

The survey is based on foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking. However, the comments are basically focussing on rape, kidnapping, suicide, murder, politicians, dance, etc., and goes different direction.

Anyways, one thing we must understand that in other countries there is different practice, i.e. multiple wives or 1 wife 4 affairs or 1 girlfriend 3-4 ongoing affairs etc., hence, those countries may be scoring better here.

Who are the perpetrators of crimes against women? It is men who make the crimes. So in other words, Indian men are the fourth most harami men in the world when it comes to being voilent on women, but are a bunch of pussycats when it comes to taking action against other men eg. terrorists, underworld thugs, real estate mafia, hawala and black money operators, dowry seekers, rapists, murderers, acid throwers, eve teasers, corrupt politicians, etc. All our (pot-bellied) men are only "macho" in silver screen, where the actor / hero will fight against 25 goondas without single scratch on body.

Right said mr Prakash Kuwait. But you are right and bit wrong also, I think India is in first place if you even take into count the rapes, gangrape & killings in custody happend in Noida, Gurgain & delhi & some part of UP (killing of a gal in police custody whcih is still to be probed) over last week.
@Lanclet Taura..the sad part is that inside country if you see highest rapes or killings happen in Gurugaon, delhi Noida & UP,all ruled by Sheelamma & Mayanty. This is happening in the vicinity of the lady with the iron fist at 10 Janpath, I dont what point it proves or dont prove. every time you see NDTV or any national channel or their online news, 2 rapes in & around delhi is promised. Of course 1000's off attrocities happenign against women in rural India is not at all accounted or reported.
