Mangaluru, Mar 1: Chairperson of Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW) Pramila Naidu said that the KSCW has registered 6,728 complaints of which 4,120 cases have been disposed and 2608 cases are still pending for three years (2021 to 2023).
She was addressing media at the zilla panchayat office here on Wednesday March 1.
She said, “The KSCW is working transparently. Its intention is to educate and empower women. The KSCW held a review meeting about problems faced by women in the state. A review meeting is pending in Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts which will be done in the coming days. After receiving a complaint about any problem faced by women, the commission will write to the concerned authority to take up the issue. Once the complaint is received, the KSCW, will act on the complaint within 15-20 days.
“Once the KSCW receives the complaint, it will work towards providing justice to the victims by scientific mediation through counsellors. In the cases of family disputes, the KSCW tries to reunite the families.
“In the state, the KSCW has found three major issues that women are facing. Taking these three issues, the KSCW has asked the education department and other authorities concerned to create awareness in schools and colleges through sensitization programmes,” she said.
Naidu also said that many women are facing problems related to love affairs without having a goal. “Hence, the KSCW has asked the education department and other authorities concerned to create awareness through moral classes. The district administrations are fully supporting this. The KSCW have also come across women facing problems due to live-in relationships. The KSCW puts its effort to solve problems through proper counselling. The commission has received 19 cases of cyber crime also,” she said.
She also added that the KSCW has registered nearly 1,053 suo motu cases. “The commission works 24*7 responding to each case. The KSCW has also received senior citizen harassment cases,” she said.
Speaking about the Dakshina Kannada, she said that cases of domestic violence, illicit affairs, and love affairs are increasing.
Zilla panchayat CEO Kumar said 722 cases of family disputes, harassment in the family, domestic violence, and dowry cases were registered in the district for the year 2020 to 2023. He said, “There are two helplines to address in cases of any problem faced by women. Helpline numbers 112 and 181 which function 24*7. There are five Mahila Santwana Kendras in the district. Expert counsellors who have done their MSW and BSW are appointed to this Santwana Kendra.
“There are five hostels for working women and over 450 women are residing in these hostels. The chief minister has allotted funds for the construction of two hostels for women which will come up in Konchady and Kankanady,” he said adding that no child marriage cases were reported in the past two years.
