Dubai, Jun 15 (PTI) A Qatar university has launched a new marine research vessel that will replace the organisation?s current vessel Mukhtabar Al-Bihar.
The vessel is named 'Janan' after the island located at the western part of the Qatari peninsula.
The 'Janan' is 42.8 meter long, 10 meters broad and has gross registered tonnage of more than 600 tonnes. The Qatar University officials said its maximum draught of 3.7 meters will allow it to reach the most shallow areas of the Arabian Gulf.
With normal cruising speed of 12.5 knots and maximum speed of 14 knots, the vessel can sail for 21 days, and accommodate a total of 30 technical and scientific staff.
The vessel?s facilities also include an environment-friendly sewage treatment unit, water desalination plant, an ER for medical emergencies, and a diving room.
