Bantwal, Mar 4: There were no cases of child marriage reported in the district for two years. Officials of the Women and Child Development Department along with the police raided a residence of family on Saturday, March 4 and prevented a minor boy's marriage which was scheduled for Sunday, March 5.

When the officials raided the residence of the boy's family, it was going ahead with its preparations to hold the marriage ceremony on Sunday in Mithalike of Thenkakajekar village under the Punjalkatte police station limits. 

Acting on a tip-off, officials raided the venue and prevented the marriage by undertaking an apology from the family members.

Second attempt to marry off a minor boy

It is said that a year ago, marriage was arranged for the same minor boy. Now, this year it was the second attempt to marry him off. Last year too, the officials who came to know about the marriage had prevented it.

Now, again for the second time, marriage had been arranged for this minor boy. Bantwal CDPO Gayathri Kambali, Punjalkatte sub-inspector, and other officials visited the residence and prevented the marriage.

In the first attempt, as officials had not allowed the marriage to take place, the family members created fake birth certificates through forgery and tried to fool the officials.

When the officials examined the documents, they came to know that the documents were fake. Later, officials convinced the family members about the child marriage issue that comes under the purview of law and took an apology and told them to cancel the marriage.
