Doha: Mangalore Cultural Association conducts maiden Sports Day

Doha, Mar 8: Mangalore Cultural Association (MCA), Doha – Qatar, hosted its maiden Sports Day in support of Qatar’s mission to promote sports and to educate the local population on ways to reduce health risks associated with an inactive lifestyle, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes.

The sports day brought together all the Karnataka-based associations on one ground for fun – filled sports and healthy competitive games. Registered teams of various Associations were officially introduced and participated in a parade ceremony after MCA president Aloysius D’Souza welcomed the gathering and delivered the key address. Teams were administered the oath by MCA’s sports secretary George Menezes. Qatar Konkani community spiritual director, Fr Nelson Lobo inaugurated the sports day event by releasing balloons. As a warm up activity the cute and gorgeous cheerleaders of MCA led the teams with a warm-up activity.

It was a long-cherished dream of MCA advisors and past presidents to organize sports day under the banner of MCA. However, the dream could not be realized in the past due to various reasons. But this dream finally came true under the enthusiastic leadership of president Aloysius D’Souza, advisors Felix Lobo, Jerry Pinto, Wilfred Fernandes, past presidents and honorary members Harry Lobo, Arthur Pais, Veena Pais nee Rebimbus, sports secretaries Dorothy Quadros, George Menezes and executive committee members..

The activities comprised of track events such as 50-meter running race, broad jump, shotput, lemon and spoon race, ping-pong, do not drop the ball for various age categories in the male and female groupings were conducted. Nail-biting mixed team competitions between the associations such as throw-ball, cricket and tug-of-war were conducted. The sports day activities were orchestrated by Jason Lobo. Emcees for the day were Sandeep Noronha, Gladson Almeida and Jovita Pereira-D'Souza. MCA advisors, Wilfred Fernandes, Felix Lobo, president of Mangalore Cricket Club, Naveen D'Souza, president of Tulu Koota, Kiran Anand and president of Bunts Qatar, Padmashree Shetty and many other community leaders were present and participated in the various sports activities. Winners were presented with medals. Overall championship of MCA’s maiden sports day event was Tulukoota and the glorious team were presented with a trophy.

The organizers received positive comments and applauds on the excellent execution of the sports day event.
