New Delhi, Jun 23: Government of India expressing its concerns over diplomats being targeted by the US has decided to support Consul General in New York Prabhu Dayal. He is facing allegations of ill-treating his domestic help.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash stated that the government is 'disappointed and surprised' at the allegations against Dayal by his former employee, which appear to be motivated and baseless.

“Dayal had impeccable personal and professional integrity and India is disappointed and deeply concerned that Indian diplomat and their family members are targeted in a friendly country like the US," he added.

“The treatment endured by Indian diplomats or their family members has resulted in negative public perceptions in India,” Prakash said.

Further, sources said that foreign secretary Nirupama Rao has asked for a review of the policies governing employment of Indian maids abroad.

Bhardwaj filed a forced labour-suit against Dayal accusing him of making sexual advances towards her and ill-treating her by making her work overtime, sleep in a closet and confiscating her passport. She said that she wanted justice for all that she went through.

Dayal, however, denied these charges as "mischievous" and "complete nonsense".
