Mangaluru: Soaring mercury – People suffer from unbearable heat, humidity

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 19: Hot and humid weather has been continuing in coastal districts since some days. As the expected rain did not pour, the temperature is going to rise further in the coming days.

On Tuesday, Dakshina Kannada district had simmering mercury. Except for the cloudy morning weather for some time, there was bright and pricking sunshine the whole day. According to IMD information, maximum temperature was 35 deg C and minimum recorded was 26 deg C. This was one deg C more than usual.

Usually in the month of April the breeze blows from east in the morning and west in the evening. Heat is more in the wind that blows in the morning. However, due to the whirlwind that has developed in the Arabian Sea, the wind is blowing from the north. As the sea coast is nearby the moisture content will be more in the air. When the temperature soars, the moisture further increases the heat index. This causes more irritation and pricking sensation as per weather expert Prasad.

According to the meteorological department, there is no warning of a heat wave at present in the coastal region. However, the average temperature recorded I 37 to 38 deg C. Weather officials say that this is common in the month of April.

Yellow alert is declared from April 20 to 22 in the coastal region and rains are expected in many places of twin districts.

Alas, gone are those days (1980-90s) when cool breeze was felt during this time of the year. Standing in Tagore Park the city looked like a jungle of coconut palms with many small red tiled buildings, never to be seen again.

See this example of a village in Rajasthan; most people who are unducated and compare with the highly educated but greedy and selfish people over here:: The villagers of Piplantri plant 111 trees every time a girl child is born and the community ensures these trees survive, attaining fruition as the girls grow up. India has a huge deficit of girls because society is obsessed with the male child and girls are considered financial burdens because of the dowry practices.[4] Over the years, people here have managed to plant over 300,000 trees on the village's grazing commons - including Neem, Sheesham, Mango, Amla among others. To ensure financial security, after the birth of a girl child, the villagers contribute Rs 21,000 collectively and take Rs 10,000 from the parents and put it in a fixed deposit bank account, which can be used only after she turns 18. To make sure that the girl child receives a proper education, the villagers make the parents sign an affidavit (legal contract) which...'' . Reading this, we the so called educated should hang our hands in shame; what say???

Those who can afford aircon and higher electricity bill are using aircon, those who can't (and they are the majority) are still surviving with or without fan, It's the aircon users who are contributing in the rise in ambient temperature..

It's time to pay back to nature for all the wrong doings and destruction of the once beautiful and pristine coastal districts.... Nature takes its own course to punish. Hope now atleast people open their eyes and work on restoration of the senseless destruction.

It has been raining in Riyadh past 1 momth. It is cool as how it used to be in Bangalore in the 90s. Travelled to Madina and it had rained all the way around 800 kms. Huge change in climate is what we see. Dubai was +22 yesterday. Power cuts are expected in India as load goes up due to a/cs. I noticed that rains in Mangalore are hot. Even though it rains it is hot and high humidity takes away the fun of rains and it is only going to get worse. Governments need to act quickly. Seas are getting more warm.

Very true; the climate in Mangalore is warm throughout the year; hardly for a weeks in winter; even during the rainy season when the rain halts for a day, the heat starts again! Overall, the climate is never salubrious!

Normally after severe winter, March - May is the best time to stay in KSA or UAE. Scorching heat in the Gulf region starts from June onwards and lasts till september.

The wise person perceives the truth in both illusion and deception. Mirages manifest in the desert and the delirious bathe in it's waters. The wise person understands the reality of mirages. He understands that in the reality of the mirage, his words will not be heard. They will continue to bathe in the mirage.

I surmise this place will suffer from a severe water scarcity in the coming years, as the main water supply source (Netravati) has already been screwed up, if alternative arrangements are not made on a war footing! I strongly opine that borewells are only a temporary solution; and uncontrolled boring will have irreversible consequences!! Please do your own research!

Concrete buildings are a main problem now added to this the roads and not sparing narrow lanes are of concrete. One day will come when all these concrete roads will be replaced by asphalt ( tar roads). The concrete roads will effect the water table.

Dylan, it's too late already as the ground water level has gone down considerably in DK; ask any borewell borer! Also, what water is available in open wells, in the city and around, is mostly contaminated with sewage effluents and unpotable; people should get their well water samples checked to clear their doubts! What's the use of building huge mansions worth crores if there is no copious supply of clean drinking water???
