Assembly elections: Rs 150 crore loss for state exchequer due to closure of liquor shops

Bengaluru, May 12: It is leant that the state exchequer has lost Rs 150 crore due to closure of liquor shops on account of state assembly elections.

Wine shops and bars were closed for two days due to polling for assembly elections in Karnataka. The state has 12500 bars and wine shops.

The government earns a revenue of Rs 80 to Rs 90 crore from the excise department every day. Even bar owners have lost a lot of money. On an average, a bar owner does transactions of more than Rs 1.5 lac.

Liquor worth more than Rs three lac is sold per day in every MSIL shop. This means that business of over Rs 187 crore is made from 12500 wine shops and bars.

Bars and wine shops will be closed for a day on May 13 due to counting of votes. However, liquor lovers had bought enough stock for two days because of the closure of liquor shops for two days.
