RBI to withdraw Rs 2,000 currency notes; to continue as legal tender

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday said that it will withdraw the Rs 2,000 denomination banknote from circulation but it will continue as legal tender.

In a statement, the RBI said: "The 2,000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 primarily to meet the currency requirements of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of legal tender status of all 500 and 1,000 banknotes in circulation at that time.

"The objective of introducing 2,000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities. Therefore, printing of 2,000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19," the RBI said.

The RBI said that about 89 per cent of the 2,000 denomination banknotes were issued prior to March 2017 and are at the end of their estimated life-span of 4-5 years.

"The total value of these banknotes in circulation has declined from Rs 6.73 lakh crore at its peak as on March 31, 2018 (37.3 per cent of notes in circulation) to Rs 3.62 lakh crore constituting only 10.8 per cent of Notes in Circulation on March 31, 2023," it said.

The RBI also pointed out that this denomination is not commonly used for transactions and further, the stock of banknotes in other denominations continues to be adequate to meet the currency requirement of the public.

"In view of the above, and in pursuance of the 'Clean Note Policy' of the Reserve Bank of India, it has been decided to withdraw the 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation," the RBI said, adding: "The banknotes in 2,000 denomination will continue to be legal tender."

It also said that all banks shall provide deposit and/or exchange facility for 2,000 banknotes until September 30, 2023.

If one has noticed, the 2000 rupees notes have vanished from circulation from quite sometime. There was a clue that something disastrous will make way soon. Demonetization proved to be a dangerous move and the king realised this when the economy is brought down to shambles. To all the people who defend the king with words like masterstroke, wait for another shocker that will hit you soon; even before you realise it. Never know what he's upto.

Demonetisation was a enormous flop .. not only flop caused enormous hardships ... Whom it was intended to target .. meaning the rich black money hoarders Had no effect .. Black money was wrongly assumed by this foolish decision as being in cash ... People can have benami assets .. real estate .. gold etc etc So cash was not black money .. so very many genuine holders suffered .. No adding further injury cash in circulation gone up ... Pre demonetisation currency in circulation was around 18 lakh crores Now crossed 30 lakh crores .... To get away from Karnataka losses .. elections .... Modani .. save Adani ....this announcement... divert attention...most banks had already stopped issuing 2000 rs notes last 2 years ..

Think people think! You are all buddhivantaras from 100% educated district, right? ...This was basically done to empty the coffers of the opposition parties before 2024 elections...elections require high amount of loose cash, and whoever controls cash will win the elections....

Government has a huge database of property prices " real /actual market value "in different areas of many cities including Mangalore. The "real market value " is much more than the "guidance value ". It would be better and safer to do all property transactions in white. Those who quote less in the sale deeds will get notices from the IT Dept.(after 3 years) and there is heavy penalty on the difference between the value quoted and the " real market value", it can lead to prosecution also. With "anonymous assessment " of income tax returns, under the table dealings will stop. A return filed from Mangalore might be assesses in UP or Assam. Better to come out clean. Only hallmarked gold can be sold a a close watch is kept on sale/ purchase of gold and jewelry.

But why make 2000 rupee notes in the first place. Isn't it a waste of resources to recall it now? Isn't it a sunk cost? Viz a vis obsolescence? who is going to bear these expenses and the costs of printing and distribution of these 2000 rupee notes? Bhakths won't care but other people do.

At present bannks are under severe stress as they have heavily given loans to many businesses and the biggest defaulters have scooted off to foreign countries. RBI is transferring dividends to the central government since 5 years and it's ability to support banks in cases of extreme situations is very weak due to this illadviced transfer. Every year govt is writing off debts to the extent of 4 lakh crores as bad debts are irrecoverable. Now the government wants money back into banks through this measure. It's better to get them exchanged from the banks than go for depositing the money as nobody knows when the economy of our nation might collapse and banks can't look towards RBI to help them to get over any crises.

It's a good decision from RBI, because the the note printed out of it only 10% is with the bank, rest 90% is out side, that means it's not with Middle class people, it's with black money holders.

Very good move. High denomination notes are not required for day to day transactions, for a large amount one can pay by check, dd, digital or card. It will be difficult for people to keep and transport black money, now gold will require hallmaring before selling so most of the back doors are shut. Anand Mahindra had said that currency notes should be only upto Rs 50, eg for rs 3000 one has to give 60 notes, beyond that check,dd,digital can be used.
