Mumbai, Jul 18 (IANS): The body of Faiz Usmani, who died after being detained for suspected links with the July 13 bomb attacks here, would be handed over to his family along with the autopsy report that blames the death on a heart attack and brain haemorrhage, a family friend said Monday.

According to Naseem Siddiqui, a neighbour and friend of the deceased, the autopsy report has revealed that Usmani suffered from high blood pressure followed by a heart attack and brain haemorrhage which led to his death.

"This is what the family has been conveyed orally, we will get a copy of the autopsy report later. We will complete his funeral today (Monday)," Siddiqui told IANS.

He said that even the medicos at Sion Hospital, where Usmani breathed his last early Sunday, had given a similar account. But the family members have alleged "torture and pressure tactics" by the investigators resulted in his death.

The 42-year-old was picked up from his Govandi residence in northeast Mumbai by police crime branch sleuths Saturday afternoon in connection with the triple bombings at Dadar, Zaveri Bazaar, and Opera House July 13, which have left 19 dead and over 100 injured so far.

Faiz Usmani was the elder brother of Afzal Usmani, a prime accused in the July 28, 2008, serial bombings in Ahmedabad which killed 56 and injured over 200 others.

Afzal Usmani was a member of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) module busted in 2008 by the Mumbai crime branch.

Living with his wife, six children and a brother, Faiz Usmani ran a grocery-cum-dry fruits shop in Shivaji Nagar area of Govandi, a thickly populated and Muslim-dominated locality.

His college-going son Aseem has alleged that after the police questioning, his father was rushed by the police to the hospital where he started vomiting.

"When he left home with the police, he was hale and hearty and we believe that he was tortured and pressurised by the police," Aseem told reporters Monday.

"The doctors there informed us that he had suffered brain haemorrhage and his chances of survival were bleak. He has virtually died in police custody...," Siddiqui said.

Anticipating complications, the state government quickly ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into the circumstances leading to Usmani's death.

State Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and legislator Abu Asim Azmi has demanded suspension of the officers who questioned Usmani.
