Mangaluru, Jun 22: “When the bus stand is nearing, why should I drive the bus fast? If I did not honk, there was a possibility that both women would have come under the wheels of the bus. Even then, the police department has filed a case against me. It is my duty to face the allegation,” said Thyagaraj, driver of the bus, who averted a woman coming under the wheels of the bus at Taudugoli cross on June 20.

Thyagaraj further said, “There is a bus stop at Taudugoli cross. I have to stop the bus there. Hence, the bus was moving at 30 to 40 km/hour speed. If I did not blare the horn, both women would have fallen under the wheels.”

Thyagaraj has been driving the bus for the past 25 years. That too he is in the same route for the past 19 years. He is happy that he has saved the lives of two women by the grace of God. But though public appreciated, according to the order of city police commissioner, case is filed on Thyagaraj.

On the contrary, a car, the driver of which lost its control hit the bus stand after colliding with a bike at Taudugoli Cross. A video of the incident was recorded in the CCTV of Naringana gram panchayat office. The video went viral on social media also. However, south traffic police of the city did not register a case at all. Though the matter was resolved amicably by the bike and car owners, the accident was of serious nature. In case of bus incident, accident did not take place at all. In addition, the lives of the women were saved by the driver. Even then the traffic police department has filed case based on the video evidence. Public are questioning the discriminatory attitude of the police.

Clear cut speed limits should be displayed within city limits and city roads. In vomjested city roads the speed limit should be 20/ 30 km .In non conjested suburbs it should be 40km. Highway outside city/village 80 km and express way 100km.

Overspeeding is an offence. Period. There are absolutely no markings on roads for vehicles and pedestrians. Pedestrian crossings run into so many hazards like barricades, dividers, open gutters. Where are pedestrians supposed to walk ? In many places there are no footpaths, some leading into pits with steel rods sticking out. Why is the CoP not hauling up MCC for dangerous conditions ?

If the CCTV video is not enough to charge the driver, them it is for entertainment. Police commissioner is absolutely right. Fine him so that he does not fly bus rather drives.

I have watched the video and it is very clear that these women were at fault. They were walking as if the road was a garden. Case should be filed against them. Hats off to the driver for controlling such a big vehicle in the nick of time. Sad that the driver is made an accused.

Bus was at high speed may be more than 50-60kmpr, but what bus driver says it doesn't look the same in CCTV, Private bus should not go beyond 40/kmpr in city limits and in highway it is ok to drive at 60kmpr considering road
