Mangaluru: Fruits, vegetables become dearer due to delay in monsoon

Mangaluru, Jun 24: Prices of vegetables and fruits have shot up as the monsoon got delayed and the crops could not be harvested.

Blue berries are sold for record price. Last year it was sold for Rs 100 to 150 per kg. This year the price has shot up to Rs 300 per kg. The reason is that the yield is very low this year. Acidic properties are more in blueberries and they are good for diabetics. That is why people show more interest in buying it.

Rambutan fruit is also sold for high price. Actually this fruit is native to Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Now it is grown in coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Goa. It is sold at Rs 400 per kg.

Prices of vegetables including tomato, beans and green chillies has soared. Tomato which was sold at Rs 20 to 30 has gone up to Rs 40 to 50 per kg. Gherkins are sold at Rs 120, green chilly at Rs 100, beans at Rs 120, Okra at Rs 80 and Carrot at Rs 80.

Cabbage at Rs 30, cauliflower Rs 60, beetroot Rs 60, onions Rs 20, bitter gourd Rs 80, aubergine Rs 60, radish Rs 60, ridge gourd Rs 80, capsicum Rs 80, pumpkin Rs 60, potato Rs 30, drumstick Rs 120, ginger Rs 300 and lime is sold at Rs 100.

    it was curse of alimighty as the rakshashas were ruling....now as sidda has come to power...rains started and within a month all prices will be down....do not be surprised if vegetables and fruits are given free also....

    real kujuma,Kodial ,it is not beacuse Siddanna is ruling.Because this year weather is making problems everywhere .WE too are having now problem with weather very hot during the day dry everywhere .Forests are burning :Usual gardening is not possible .First time having problems with water.Plants are not growing as we want.

    What they quote as "Blue Berry in Mangalore is actually called as "Jambool fruit in Hindi"::Jambolan, Indian blackberry, black plum, Malabar plum, Portuguese plum, purple plum and Jamaica are common names of Jamun!!

    These prices are all fixed by the traders and middle men who are taking advantage of the situation and profiting themselves. The real growers of the crop get nothing but peanuts....all unfair practices.

    Read the report again; if there are no adequate rains how will you grow food items? There was severe food scarcity in UK, Germany, Greece etc and Switzerland is facing severe drought conditions since more than a year; uncomfortable forest 🔥 in many parts of the world including USA.
