Udupi: Tourists defy life guards’ instructions at Malpe beach, locals urge action

Udupi, Jun 26: It is raining heavily since two to three days in the coastal region. The waves of the sea have also turned violent. However, the number of tourists arriving to Malpe beach is not reduced. The concern is that they defy the warning of life guards and venture in deep waters of the sea.

Many tourists are seen playing with huge waves along with children. A net is installed for a distance of one km at Malpe beach to prevent the tourists from getting down into the sea. However, some tourists get down to the sea at the south end, where nets is not put. The instructions of life guards are not followed and sometimes the tourists even engage in verbal duel with them.

On Sunday morning, some tourists got down into the sea through the rocks near sea walk area. The locals said that it is very dangerous as the depth of the sea near the rock area cannot be judged. They also say that tourists arriving from outstation districts does not have proper information about the changes that occur every hour on sea shore. So the locals urge strict action on tourists who defy safety instructions.

Deputy commissioner M Kurma Rao said, “Nets are already installed at the beach to prevent tourists from venturing into the sea. Warning boards are displayed near seawalk and other areas. Even then it is observed that the tourists are crossing the limits. Action will be taken after spot inspection once again.”
