TULF condemns assault on Tamil journalist

Colombo, Aug 1 (IANS) The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) has condemned what it said was an attempt to murder Tamil journalist G. Kuganathan.

The news editor of the Tamil daily Uthayan survived the attempt in Jaffna Friday night, the party said.

TULF said that on an earlier occasion too, an armed group broke into Kuganathan's office and demanded to know his whereabouts. When they failed to elicit the information, they killed two other employees.

"It is very unfortunate that harassment of journalists, particularly in Jaffna, is on the increase," TULF said.

"This type of brutality should be stopped forthwith, and the police should go all out to detect the culprits."
