Mangaluru: Nanthoor Circle remains a bottleneck for motorists driving in, out of city

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, July 30: Nanthoor Circle is a prominent junction where vehicles of three National Highways and vehicles from the city converge. National Highway 169 (Mangaluru-Shringeri-Shivamogga), National Highway 66 (Mangaluru-Karwar), and National Highway 75 (Mangaluru-Bengaluru) have to invariable pass this junction while entering the city. Now, there are several major traffic issues at this junction. Invaribly, motorists moving away from the city and entering the National Highway or thos who are entering the city have to suffer from regular traffic jams at Nanthoor Circle.

Motorists have to stop their vehicles for a few minutes while moving via Nathoor Circle. During the peak hours, there is a huge traffic pile-up on all the four roads leading to the junction.

The road that leads a motorist into the city from the circle (Malikatte) is steep and curved. The are several potholes on the road connecting Nanthoor from Padil. Vehicles from National Highway 66 have to take a 90-degree turn while moving toward Padil.

Commuters are cursing the traffic management system whenever there is a VIP movement and traffic comes to a standstill on the road during such  movements as zero traffic is clamped forcing motorists to wait near the circle.

Students and employees coming from Padil Junction, National Highway 169 and NH 66 towards the city have to wait near this circle at least twice a day. Sometimes people are forced to waste several minutes waiting on this road due to dense traffic.

Motorists woes are compounded during the summer months when they have to stand in the traffic amidst the scorching temperature. When the circle was being developed in the year 2003 as many as 5000 vehicles were passing through this circle. Now, the number of vehicles passing this circle is ten times more.

As there are several hospitals in the city, sometimes the Ambulance vehicles get blocked near this circle. On some occasions, Ambulance vehicles are forced to take these roads and it becomes an herculean task for the police to make way for the ambulance vehicles to pass through the traffic.

If a flyover is constructed density of vehicular traffic can be considerably but temporarily reduced. Constructing an alternate road may become essential to stop heavy trucks from entering the city, sources indicate.

The National Highway Authority of India has reportedly invited tenders to build a flyover. But, the work can be resume only after the monsoon is over.

Recently they have closed the right turn near Westline signature/ Sandesh. So those living in Tharethota are forced to take the Nanthoor circle for a U turn. This is additional burden to the traffic at Nanthoor. The reason for blocking the U turn was to prevent traffic from Tharethota driving in the opposite direction to use the turn gap. I've seen educated people like lawyers and doctors drive the wrong way. Now everyone is suffering. Responsibility works both ways, not just for cops.

Ours is the ONLY national highway which has options for U Turns or right turns for every galli in Mangalore because of political pressure . Build a flyover in KPT & Nanthoor and block all Uturns from Pumpwell till Kottara Chowki which includes right turns just before Nanthoor, Padua & SKS . The priority of National highway is planned for vehicles travelling from all over the country and not for locals . I have seen Mangaloreans taking a fight with vehicles from outside states when they drive through Mangalore as they have no idea about the local problems or issues .

I was born, lived and tresspassed this junction for years. When our home was cut into half for roadvextension we asked the road enginerr, is it sensible to convert a local city road into a hiway? That toovthey diverted the state highway from padil via kaikamba to nantoor cros to connect to MH 17?? Earlier it was goingbthru nagoori to pumpwell. Why was it diverted via bikernakatte... only God andbour ministers know. They must revert to the old plan.

If they could divert large vehicles to some other route during rush hours, crores of ruppees would be saved but BJP MP MLA's only know poorly designed flyover and underpass.

Its Simple, Just build 2 Way fly over from Padua to pumpwell so that the traffic can move smoothly and make curve roads towards all the 8 corners all the problems can be solved. The Problem is our MP the Great Nalin Kumar who is the Minister for changing the road names of Mangalore. So we cant expect any development under name changing MP. Hopefully Central Govt BJP can select any other candidate and not give ticket to Nalin Kumar.

As mentioned in this article, the circle was meant for 5000 odd vehicles back in the year 2003 and its the same circle even today with 50,000 vehicles commuting. While we move around this confuJunction , we have no idea which side we need watch out for approaching vehicles. Our neck has to rotate 360 degrees.

We are boasting of Engineering at its peak with builders building sky scrapers 65 floor etc etc. But no one could design a proper flyover. The only usefull flyover we have is the AJ flyover. From 25 years Mangalore city has not developed. We don't have a proper stadium. Nor a good govt hospital like in goa and Kerala. Nor we have a good busstand. Nor a railway station.

I was in Delhi for more than 12 years and ,there are minimum 20 circles than our Nanthoor, and the traffic is flowing without any problems. Here in Mangalore if our traffic department is going to install signal lights, all problems will solve automatically. But I think that our service bus and city buses are not allowing to install. That what I believe. According to me our Traffic department is tottaly failed.

This is a long standing issue. Please do something to resolve it atvthe earliest. Apart from this thwrr are many more new roads, flyovers, bus stop shelters and proper drainage and pedestrian walkways needed. needed in Mangalore. Also as part of smart city pkesse do implement all the projects. Mangalore is neglected for long. Mangalore has great potential in terms of Tourism and IT enabled services. Flyover will only help people going to pumpwell side. But under the flyover there will be more traffic. So plan properly before constructing flyover.
