Udupi, Aug 4: A mythbuster awareness programme on diet information on social media was organized at Canara Bank Retired Officers Association (R) Udupi Zone. Pradeepa R Bhakta president of the region, K M Nayak C C member, Sudeendra Bhandary R S, resource person Pallavi Mahesh Shettigar, HOD Dietetics and Applied Nutrition, Raghavendra G, assistant professor from Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA), MAHE Manipal, were on the dais.

Guest speaker Pallavi said it is noticed that senior citizens normally follow the advice received on their mobile phones related to diet. Following baseless information without a study may lead to health fluctuations. She explained in detail with examples how to identify such misinformation. She also shared some nutritional tips for specific health issues.

Raghavendra G, the coordinator of the session said that the purpose of this program is to spread awareness among senior citizens on using mobile phones for their daily activities as a part of the Gerontechnology Empowerment Programme (GEP) research. Such programmes are conducted in Udupi district and Mangaluru, he added.

Pradeepa R  Bhakta, in his presidential speech, shared the seriousness of the matter by giving a few humorous examples of how senior citizens including himself use information about food shared on social media.

K M Nayak welcomed the gathering and introduced the new and associate members to the house. He informed the latest developments regarding signing the minutes of 100% DA neutralisation for retirees before November 2002, the charter of demands submitted by CBOA for the 12th bipartite settlement, and the points concerning the demands of Retirees and pensioners, also the staff welfare measures announced by the Canara bank for 2023.

House paid tributes by observing a minute silence to those who had passed away in the previous months. Avinashcahndra Hegde compered the program, and Sudeendra Bhandary proposed a vote of thanks. P Nagaraj Rao, a member of the association and in-charge president of the Udupi Senior Citizens Association was present and extended his valuable support to this event. As many as 60 members including 13 associate members attended the meeting.
