Udupi, Aug 8: Minister Eshwar Khandre recently met with experts from the World Bank to discuss a comprehensive Rs 840 crore plan aimed at controlling plastic waste in the coastal region. In response, the minister has instructed the Department of Environment to draft a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed initiative.
The World Bank delegation highlighted that a staggering 50 tonnes of plastic accumulate across the 317-kilometre coastal expanse. This accumulation poses a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems.
The delegation also engaged with local fishermen, suggesting that they could partake in plastic collection during breaks from their fishing activities. They emphasized that plastic collection could potentially yield more profitable returns than fishing itself.
Under the proposed plan, the World Bank will contribute 70% of the Rs 840 crore funding, while the remaining 30% will be allocated by the state government. The project has garnered support from the central environment, forest, and weather departments, as detailed by project officers.
The meeting saw the presence of senior officers from the Department of Forest and Environment, including Brijesh Kumar, Dikshit, and Vijay Mohan Raj.
