Puttur, Aug 25: Uppinangady police have arrested Jameel Chacha, a warrant accused who had been on the run for three years in connection with a 2019 jewellery shop theft case, after tracing him to Rajasthan.

Jameel Chacha (62), a resident near a gurudwara in Dongri village of Rajasthan’s Bondi district, had allegedly stolen jewellery worth lakhs of rupees from a jewellery shop in Uppinangady and fled without leaving any clue.

Then-SI Nanda Kumar and his team had gathered information about the accused’s gang and launched an operation in Rajasthan, where the accused were arrested.

The accused were later released on bail but failed to appear before the court for the proceedings and remained absconding for three years. Warrants were subsequently issued against them.

Police traced Jameel Chacha to Rajasthan, arrested him and brought him back before producing him before the court.

The court has remanded him to judicial custody.
