Mangaluru, Aug 11: The student of rangers/rovers and traffic warden squad of St Agnes College under the aegis of its coordinator Lawren Castelino and principal Dr Venissa AC are monitoring the traffic and assisting the traffic police at the entrance of the St Agnes College.

The rangers/rovers and traffic warden squad of St Agnes College have been monitoring the traffic by assisting the traffic police personnel at the entrance of the St Agnes College from the past many years. This year too, nearly 40 students are involved in monitoring the traffic.

Coordinator and assistant professor commerce department, Lawren Castelino says that the students are divided into groups and they assist the traffic personnel on rotation basis. Students assist traffic cops every day from 8:15 am to 9 am.

Scores of students come to pursue their education at St Agnes College and St Agnes School. Even during the recent police phone-in programme, a caller had demanded to deploy a cop at the school and college entrances during the peak hours. The students of St Agnes taking up the initiative to assist the traffic cops and help children, students and others crossing the road during the peak hours, is commendable.

It will also raise awareness among the students about the traffic rules and regulations, signals and importance of zebra crossing. The students involved in the work are ensuring that the students and children cross the road using the zebra crossing.

Speaking to daijiworld, student Jayanth Gowda from II BCom said, “Apart from classroom, St Agnes College gives us the opportunity to serve the society in every possible way. From the two days, we have been monitoring the traffic at the St Agnes entrance. That is helping us to build leadership qualities as well.”

I BCom student Shefali said, “We have been assisting the traffic cops in monitoring the traffic at the college entrance. We got to know about traffic signs and also the importance of zebra crossing. We also noticed some non-cooperating vehicle drivers as they were taking out their frustration. Some were very supportive and encouraged us to continue the same.”

Principal St Agnes College Dr Venissa AC said, “The students of rangers/rovers and traffic warden squad have taken up the initiative to monitor traffic in front of the St Agnes gate. I was very happy when the students expressed their desire for the same. We also make sure that the students here get the maximum exposure to all sectors so that they realize their potential and capabilities to do well in their life. We have also plans of sending our students to other places where they can assist the traffic cops in busy junctions.”

Deputy chief traffic warden Francis Maxim Moras said, “Firstly, the students need to be educated about the traffic. Most of the students are unaware about the importance of zebra crossing. The zebra crossing is the safety point for the pedestrians. People should know where they need to cross, understand the sign boards, tread on footpaths and slowdown on humps. If they do not understand these basic points, being educated is of no use.

“I congratulate the students of St Agnes College who have taken up the initiative to assist the traffic cops. It should continue for a long period of time. For the first two weeks, it might be difficult. As time passes, people will be aware that the students of St Agnes are monitoring the traffic in the peak hours here,” said Francis Maxim Moras.

Volunteers are required all over Mangalore and Udupi to control the overgrowing cars and motorcycles, as the Transport Dept of Karnataka are for the Politicians only. However, these Volunteers must be provided with bottled water and proper gear such as waterproof Safety Shoes ( see them wearing chappals and sandals), Red Hats with brims and Safety Goggles and Safety Vests and as well as professionally manufactured aluminium hand held Extra large STOP and GO visibly painted signs on each side so that these signs are visible to drivers and pedestrians from a distance. There should be a 12inch width Yellow thick line before the Zebra crossing on each side so that the cars and motorbikes know where to stop. The Transport Dept that earns in millions against Registration and Renewals should supply the above to the Volunteers who are actually doing the Transport Dept. job and dont get any incentives

Why oh why!!! Why should our children risk their lives for the incompetence of the administration? Traffic management is Traffic police's duty. Taxes are duly paid for it. Lack of manpower in the police department is not these poor kids problem. Schools and colleges are licensed and pay enough fees and taxes for the government to arrange smooth traffic flow. Seeing how unruly the motorists can be, who don't even follow the traffic lights where cameras are placed, our children are at risk here.

It is unfortunate to tell the motorist to allow pedestrians crossing on a zebra crossing. This shows licencing blunder and corruption creeped in our society.

Very good initiative indeed. I happened to pass by St. Agnes College this morning and noticed many students of the college were in a mighty hurry to cross the road inspite of being asked by the wardens to wait. Some of them crossed the road inspite of heavy traffic thereby defeating the very purpose of this initiative. Such students need to be corrected and warned if need be.

One day drama will not solve the traffic problems. Our traffic Police only can solve this. They must punish the offender daily. Our traffic Police must active full day. Punishment is the only solution. Those who violating rules, Pedestrian or vehicles riders, dailpublish their names in press report. And keep them inside station atleast for a day. I challenge we can improve.
